'Top player' - Saints duo back Arsenal's 'outstanding' 16-year-old talent for success

At 16 years and 73 days, Dowman recently became the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history when he netted in a 2-0 win against Everton.

The Hale End prodigy smashed the record, previously held by James Vaughan, by 197 days, to continue an exciting start to his football career.

Dowman scored 18 goals in 18 domestic games for Arsenal's under-18s last season, and he has already become a star player for England's under-19s.

With doubts over the fitness of Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke, Dowman could be tasked to start for Mikel Arteta in the Cup quarter-final at Saints.

"I've seen his latest performances, and he has definitely shown that he's up to the level," said Eckert, asked about Dowman's meteoric rise.

"That's outstanding if you can do that at 16 years old. The challenge for young players, very often, is to get some consistency in their performances.

"It's not just about having those peak moments, but what I've seen is a top-class player, and I'm very sure that he'll make his way in the game."

Saints defender James Bree could be up against the youngster, who has played as a winger for Arsenal in his seven appearances in the first team.

Speaking to the Daily Echo, Bree added: "I've watched a few of their games and seen clips - he looks like an unbelievable talent.

"If he's playing, hopefully we can keep him as quiet as we can, but he looks like a top player already. Hopefully, he can be good for England as well."

Saints take on Arsenal to win a trip to Wembley in the semi-finals of the FA Cup later this month, at St Mary's on Saturday, April 4, with kick-off at 8pm.
