Why Trevor Lawrence is Finally Set Up For Success

Over Trevor Lawrence’s five years as a starter, he has faced consistent roster overhauls and an influx of coaches. So far, Lawrence has had three head coaches and four play-callers in his first five years, which has been a big reason for his inconsistencies.

Lawrence has fallen victim to his surroundings after showing flashes of success. The former first overall pick broke out in 2022 with Doug Pederson calling the plays. It appeared that Lawrence was on the right track to becoming one of the league’s top quarterbacks. In 2024, Pederson made a change to the offense, handing the play-calling duties to offensive coordinator Press Taylor.

Why Trevor Lawrence is Finally Set Up For Success

Though the offense was shaky, the Jaguars had navigated themselves to an 8-3 record with a chance at the number one seed. In week 13, Lawrence suffered an ankle sprain, and the next five games were a complete disaster, with the team losing multiple inexplicable games and the entire team not playing up to standard.

After the late-season collapse in 2023, it was clear the Jaguars’ roster needed to be upgraded. The Jaguars were busy during the 2025 offseason, with general manager Trent Baalke signing wide receiver Gabe Davis, center Mitch Morse, and drafting wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr.

Expectations for the team had lowered, but most fans and media pundits still expected the Jaguars to contend for the AFC South title and claim a playoff spot. Instead, the season was a total disaster, losing their first four games and finding themselves in an all too familiar spot.

Gabe Davis did not fit with the offense, the offensive line was a mess, and the defense was a bottom-five unit in the NFL. The season, while largely already over, fully imploded when Lawrence suffered a season-ending concussion against the Texans in Week 13. It was clear the Jaguars were heading into yet another rebuild.

2025 Offseason

While the hiring process of general manager James Gladstone and head coach Liam Coen was shaky, it appeared things were finally headed in the right direction. Gladstone prioritized the offensive line, drafted two-way player Travis Hunter, as well as multiple running backs, and Liam Coen hired young, up-and-coming coaches to fill out the coordinator positions. The Jaguars were finally taking roster and coaching management seriously to properly support their franchise quarterback.

At the halfway point in the season, the Jaguars were 5-3, with many questions still surrounding the quarterback and offense as a whole. During the trade deadline, James Gladstone pulled the trigger, trading future draft capital for wide receiver Jakobi Meyers. After the Jaguars collapse against the Houston Texans in Week 11, Liam Coen had an honest conversation with his quarterback, telling him to “let it rip”.

This set the stage for the second half of the season, where the Jaguars would win eight straight games with one of the best offenses in the NFL. The season ended in disappointment, but the Jaguars have many of their future core players in place, veterans and young players alike, along with both offensive and defensive coordinators being retained for the 2026 NFL season.

Continuity Has Arrived

This will be the first time Trevor Lawrence will have continuity among the offensive skill positions and coaching staff. Coming off a career year, this is exactly what the young quarterback needs. The flashes have always been there, and in 2025 it came together in the back half of the season. Now, Lawrence will have an opportunity to put together a complete season for the first time in his career.
