Marc Cucurella thinks there is only one left-back better than him in world football

Many Chelsea fans would select Marc Cucurella as the best left-back in world football right now, however the Spaniard himself believes one player ranks above him.

The importance of the defender to both club and country is clear to see. He played over 70 games for both combined across a 12 month period.

It has been only his importance at Stamford Bridge that has restricted Jorrel Hato’s development, with the Dutchman showing great signs in his early days at the club.

Marc Cucurella says Nuno Mendes is better than him

Cucurella was pitched the question regarding the best left-back in the world by RNE Audio’s Sports Radio Gazette, however he believes that honour belongs to PSG star Nuno Mendes.

He said: “I’m at very good level… but Nuno Mendes is the best left back in the world.”

Chelsea got a harsh reminder of Mendes’ quality when the Blues squared up to PSG in the Champions League Round of 16.

The likes of Cole Palmer got no joy down Chelsea’s right-hand-side, while the Portugal star was a constant threat going forwards.

Cucurella in hot water with some Chelsea fans

The international break saw Cucurella jet off to represent the Spanish national team, where the prospect of a future away from Stamford Bridge was put to him.

The left-back hinted at a possible future move to Barcelona, whilst also questioning the current transfer strategy in place at the club.

Cucurella escaped an in-house sanction at Stamford Bridge, while Enzo Fernandez will miss the next two games after his own comments in the media.

It remains to be seen what reaction greets the Spaniard when he returns to the pitch, although he is likely to be handed a rest against Port Vale in the FA Cup.
