Everything you need to know about why Enzo Fernandez has been dropped by Chelsea
Chelsea's punishment:Chelsea have taken a firm stance by dropping Enzo Fernandez from the squad following a series of comments that cast doubt on his long-term future at Stamford Bridge. Manager Liam Rosenior confirmed the decision was made as a "sanction" because the midfielder had crossed a line that the club simply could not ignore.
Enzo's initial comments: The controversy began when Fernandez was asked about his future following Chelsea's Champions League exit at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain. He told reporters he didn't know what would happen next, noting that there were only eight games left in the season plus the FA Cup before he would re-evaluate everything.
Real Madrid hint: The situation escalated dramatically when Fernandez took to a Kick stream recently and spoke openly about his desire to live in the Spanish capital because it reminds him of Buenos Aires. While he did not mention Real Madrid by name, his admission that he would be "more comfortable in Spanish" than speaking English and specifically liked Madrid was widely interpreted as a huge hint toward joining Real Madrid.
Backlash: Chelsea supporters have reacted with fury to the Argentine's comments, especially as they come at a time where Chelsea have suffered four successive defeats. Many fans feel that the club-record signing is showing a lack of respect by flirting with a move away while the team is struggling to secure Champions League football.
John Obi Mikel's comments: Chelsea legend John Obi Mikel did not hold back on his podcast, stating that Fernandez should leave if he is no longer committed to the badge. Mikel argued that the midfielder’s behaviour was not that of a leader and slammed him for treating a prestigious club like Chelsea as a mere stepping stone.
Liam Rosenior's statement: Although he initially tried to downplay the situation by claiming a private conversation with Enzo had cleared the air, manager Rosenior eventually admitted he had to act. He said that while he has no personal issues with Enzo’s character, a disciplinary line was crossed that necessitated his removal from the upcoming matchday squads.
Dressing room friction: Reports claim the Argentine's behaviour has not gone down well with his team-mates, with some players said to be unhappy with his berating of others on the pitch. His leadership as vice-captain has been called into question after he was seen shouting at goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen during the recent loss to PSG.
Matches he will miss: As a direct result of his internal ban, Fernandez is set to miss the FA Cup clash against Port Vale this Saturday. Rosenior confirmed the midfielder will also be unavailable for the high-profile Premier League game against Manchester City the following Sunday as the club continues to assess his situation.
Agent's response: Fernandez's agent has hit out at Rosenior for handing the Chelsea midfielder a "completely unfair" and "harsh" punishment. He confirmed that fresh contract negotiations between player and club are on the horizon, saying there was "no reason" for such a drastic step.
Future at Stamford Bridge: The decision to drop Fernandez has fuelled speculation that his time in London could be coming to a premature end this summer. While he is under a long-term contract, his refusal to guarantee his stay beyond the World Cup has left the club's hierarchy questioning his loyalty and role in the squad's future.
