Fabrizio Romano has offered a new update on Sandro Tonali's Newcastle United future amid Premier League rival interest.
That’s according to renowned transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, who has given a further update on the Italian’s situation.
Tonali - who suffered more World Cup qualification heartbreak with Italy on Tuesday - is in his third season as a Newcastle player, registering 10 goals and 10 assists in 104 appearances across all competitions during that time.
The midfielder has helped the Magpies finally end their trophy drought by beating Liverpool in last season’s EFL Cup final, while he’s also spearheaded two Champions League campaigns in three years.
Fabrizio Romano’s latest Sandro Tonali update
Tonali’s form in a black and white shirt has unsurprisingly brought admiring glances from elsewhere in the Premier League and throughout Europe’s elite nations.
And with Newcastle in serious danger of missing out on European qualification entirely this season, speculation regarding Tonali’s future will only gather pace in the coming months - especially as he enters the final two years of his contract at St. James’ Park.
With that in mind, it’s no shock to hear Romano talking of maintained interest from Man Utd, while Manchester City and Arsenal are also keeping tabs on the situation. However, the future of former Magpie Elliot Anderson - who has enjoyed a wonderful rise to key England international since joining Nottingham Forest - will play a major role in deciding what happens to Tonali.
"The reports I saw in England, with maximum respect as always, are that Man Utd had Sandro Tonali as a top target one year ago, but it was too expensive. Now the feeling is still that this deal is expensive. It's too expensive. It's complicated,” Romano said on his YouTube channel.
“So this is the message coming out of Manchester United today, guys. I can guarantee that Manchester United already had some contacts this year with Tonali's camp to be informed about the situation, to understand the pricing, and all the rest.
"Arsenal made some calls to be informed on the situation as well. Manchester City like Tonali, but the top target for City is Elliot Anderson at Nottingham Forest.
"Man Utd still don't have any indication on the pricing from Newcastle for Tonali. So Man Utd will not do something crazy for Tonali. If the price is right, for sure, he's a player on the list. Anderson is also really appreciated and really highly rated by Manchester United. There is a battle in this moment in Manchester, because Man Utd and Man City both really appreciate Anderson and Tonali.
"Then we have to understand the pricing. There are several factors before these clubs decide to go for these players, and also the managerial factor. Who's going to be Man Utd manager? Michael Carrick has chances, but it is still not decided, still not communicated. Pep Guardiola, at the moment, he's still confirming in public that he's staying at Manchester City, but at the moment, it is still something we have to control with a special eye until the end of the season.
"So we have to understand what kind of project will be in place for next season, and for the future. But for sure, the appreciation for Tonali and Anderson is confirmed for both Man Utd and Man City. [They are] waiting to understand pricing, if they want to bid, how much wages, commission and all the rest."
