Ryan Giggs backs Michael Carrick to remain Man Utd coach beyond this season

Ryan Giggs has been impressed by the job Michael Carrick has done as interim head coach and believes his former teammate deserves the job beyond this season.

Manchester United have enjoyed a significantly improved run of results since Michael Carrick became interim head coach in January.

At the time of Carrick’s arrival, United’s chances of qualifying for the Champions League were remote. Now they are sitting third in the Premier League with seven games left to play.

Carrick is making a strong case to remain in charge beyond this season, although it is understood that United won’t decide until the campaign ends.

Ryan Giggs can’t see past Michael Carrick for Man Utd head coach job

United legend Ryan Giggs thinks Carrick deserves to become a full-time head coach.

The most decorated footballer in English football history thinks the interim has done enough to warrant the role on a full-time basis.

While speaking to the Webby & O’Neill YouTube channel, Giggs explained that Carrick got fans back believing in the team again.

He also credited Carrick for bringing calmness to the club amidst the chaotic results that occurred under Ruben Amorim, saying: “The hardest thing in the world as a manager is to win games and he’s doing that, we’ve lost one game.

“Not only that, just the feeling around the place, we were going to games and watching games not knowing what we were going to get. It’s all changed now, fans are coming to games now or watching TV thinking, ‘right, we’ve got a massive chance here.’

“We’re looking up now rather than down – can we catch City? The turnaround has been amazing. I think we were all like, well I was, ‘we need seven or eight players,’ to now maybe needing three or four in the summer, which is more achievable than seven or eight players.

“I can’t see past Michael at the moment, I just can’t. I think he’s brought a calmness, I think he’ll bring in Man United players because he knows the club. Give him time I think he goes from strength to strength.”

Carrick’s popularity as head coach has grown dramatically, and it should have happened at United rather than another club, though the 44-year-old did a decent job at Middlesbrough in the Championship.

Ryan Giggs record as Man Utd interim manager

Giggs became United’s first player-manager in 87 years in April 2024.

The former Wales manager stood in for four matches following David Moyes’ dismissal.

United won two of those matches, while drawing one and losing one.

In a 3-1 win over Hull City, Giggs substituted himself on for the final 20 minutes to mark his 963rd and final appearance for the club.
