Manchester United Champions League Hopes Given Massive Dorgu Boost

Manchester United give positive Patrick Dorgu update

The Dane was in fine form before his injury

Could be back before the end of the season

Manchester United’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League have received a huge boost, with Patrick Dorgu taking the next step in his road to recovery.

The Danish winger has been out of action since suffering a hamstring injury in a 3–2 win over Arsenal on January 25. He had been in fantastic form in Carrick’s first two matches.

Dorgu moved further forward on the left, where he had more freedom to operate. Against Manchester City and Arsenal, he found the net in both games, earning man of the match in the latter, despite being forced off.

The sensational strike against Arsenal stood out. He rocketed an effort off the underside of the bar to make it 2–1 in the 50th minute. It later won United’s Goal of the Month for January and earned a nomination for the Premier League award.

When Can we Expect Dorgu back?

There is no doubt that the injury came at a frustrating time for Dorgu. After 12 difficult months following his £25 million move from Lecce, there were finally growing signs of progress.

United had high hopes for the 21-year-old as they looked for a long-term replacement for Luke Shaw. But his first 12 months at the club showed little promise.

This changed this season after he performed well against Chelsea on September 20, scoring his first goal in a United shirt with a perfect, well-timed volley in the 26th minute. A well-deserved belated Christmas present on Boxing Day.

But the matches against Manchester City and Arsenal truly showed his strength.

What next for Dorgu?

The Manchester United official website has said: “There is still no timeline on his return to first-team action, but he continues to work on his recovery with the current aim of being back with the squad before the end of the season.

“He has since been working hard at Carrington with our medical staff, and we provided an update on his progress last month, as he works through a strength and conditioning programme to aid his recovery.

“We can now reveal that Dorgu has progressed to working on the pitches on an individual basis at our training base as the next phase of his rehabilitation.”

It seems unlikely that we will see Dorgu feature against Leeds United. With the match just nine days away, on 13 April, it has probably come to soon.

The Reds will then travel to the capital to face off in a Champions League battle against Chelsea five days later on 18 April. Once again, Dorgu might not be ready to return for that game, although he could be pushing for a place on Michael Carrick’s bench.

We will most likely see him on 27 April, when United host Brentford. By then, it will have been 3 months—12 weeks—since he sustained his hamstring, giving him enough time to recover and get back to match fitness.
