Guardiola was absent from the touchline for the tie while serving a suspension, yet his presence was hardly necessary as City cruised to a dominant win. All four goals arrived within a breath-taking 20-minute spell, with Liverpool completely capitulating as Slot looked on helplessly. The home faithful particularly savoured that extraordinary scoring burst, launching into the Poznan before bellowing "you're getting sacked in the morning" loudly in Slot's direction. Further humiliation descended upon Liverpool in the second half as Mohamed Salah had a penalty saved by James Trafford.
The 33-year-old managed four attempts on goal, with two wayward efforts flying wildly off target from close range. It proved yet another dismal attacking performance from Liverpool's star man, prompting a scathing assessment from Ally McCoist.
Speaking on TNT Sports, he said: "I didn't fancy him [to score the penalty]. I didn't fancy him at all. It's a shame because he looks a shadow of the man that has lit up this league and lit up this country. It's a shame he's going out this way. He doesn't look like a confident man or a confident player at this moment in time."
The scrutiny surrounding Slot's position appears to have intensified since early March with Liverpool securing just two victories from a potential seven fixtures. The Liverpool manager offered a particularly scathing assessment following the match in which he lamented familiar issues that have troubled his team throughout this season.
He told TNT Sport: "What has been missing for large parts of the season, converting our chances into goals. I think it was an even game up until they scored the penalty and the last time we played here we conceded just before half-time and again today.
"We get a penalty and we get a chance but that doesn't tell me anything. The first 35 minutes was the sort of team I would like to see but the 20 minutes after that, we have to defend so, so much better than we were doing today.
"Not nice to go in at 2-0 just before half-time, not helpful for your mood especially after the season we have had. That was really hard to take. The only good thing was that we didn't concede more."
Things are only going to get even more difficult for his side, as they have two Champions League quarter-final ties against Paris Saint-Germain, either side of a perilous home clash against Fulham.
