Manchester United’s stance on Mainoo and Maguire
The Reds duo were back in action for England
Contracts to be sorted before World Cup
Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Manchester United intend to sort out the futures of Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire now that they are back from international duty. The pair were recalled by England manager Thomas Tuchel after lengthy spells out of the Three Lions’ squad.
Mainoo and Maguire were both impressive while representing their country. Many believe Maguire proved he warrants a starting berth at the World Cup, let alone a spot in the squad.
The 33-year-old might head to North America after putting pen to paper on a new contract. His current deal is up in June but the club seem keen to keep the veteran centre-back.
Romano: Man Utd Want Contracts Sorted
Maguire and Mainoo have been mainstays in Michael Carrick’s team ever since the English coach replaced Ruben Amorim in January. His appointment has been hugely beneficial for Mainoo who failed to win over Amorim and a potential exit seemed a real possibility.
According to Romano, United intend to “accelerate” both of their new contracts. The Italian journalist said on his YouTube channel:
“With Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo returning from the national team, Manchester United are now prepared to accelerate and formally close both new contracts for the players before the World Cup. This is the mission.”
Maguire has enjoyed one of his best seasons as a United player and been superb alongside Lisandro Martinez. He has made 20 appearances across competitions, posting two goals and one assist while helping the Reds keep four clean sheets.
Mainoo is back playing his best football under Carrick, and it’s led to a breakthrough in talks over an extension. The 20-year-old has made 24 appearances across competitions, registering three assists.
The Right Decision
Keeping Maguire and Mainoo is a perfect way to start the summer, especially because they are part of the English contingent at Old Trafford. While the defender brings years of experience and leadership, the young midfielder is regarded as a future superstar.
Both might be joined by new faces in their respective departments as the club looks to build on a possible return to the Champions League. The Reds remain linked with Elliot Anderson as a potential Casemiro replacement, although Manchester City are also eyeing the Nottingham Forest man.
A new name has emerged on INEOS’ wishlist as reports claim that Nico Schlotterbeck is of interest. The Borussia Dortmund centre-back might be under consideration due to concerns over Matthijs de Ligt’s long-term back injury.
