Arsenal do battle with Southampton for a place in the FA Cup semi-finals
The penultimate FA Cup quarter-final tie takes place tonight as Arsenal take on Southampton. It's a return to action for the Gunners, 13 days removed from defeat in the Carabao Cup final where hopes of an unprecedented quadruple were dashed and now must overcome a tricky test at St Mary's Stadium to keep their treble dream alive.
Arsenal are bidding for an immediate return to Wembley and a first FA Cup semi-final appearance in six years as Mikel Arteta aims to end the club's long wait for a major trophy. Eberechi Eze and Piero Hincapie are both unavailable because of injury, but Martin Odegaard and Jurrien Timber could return while talented youngster Max Dowman is in line to feature again following his outstanding display in the fifth round.
Southampton, meanwhile, are on a run of 14 games unbeaten in all competitions and overcame Premier League opposition in Fulham in the last round thanks to an injury time penalty. The winners of this tie will progress to the FA Cup semi-finals, learning their opponents when the draw takes place tomorrow. Arsenal team news: Odegaard and Timber to return
Mikel Arteta was in a typically unhelpful mood at his pre-match press conference, though he confirmed that Noni Madueke and Piero Hincapie were out.
William Saliba, Gabriel, Leandro Trossard, Martin Odegaard and Jurrien Timber are expected to be fit for the trip to St Mary’s.
Mikel Merino is definitely ruled out, while Arteta has a big decision to make in goal after Kepa Arrizabalaga was criticised for his mistake in the cup final defeat to Man City.
