Ravens Won’t Commit to Tyler Loop as Kicker Despite Strong Rookie Stats

The Ravens could add competition for kicker Tyler Loop during training camp

The Baltimore Ravens‘ offseason has been one full of change so far. John Harbaugh is no longer the team’s head coach, with Jesse Minter being hired to replace him. Several key players from the 2025 squad have departed in free agency, while Trey Hendrickson (not Maxx Crosby) highlights a new group of players who have joined the team.

While it’s been an incredibly busy start to the offseason, there could still be more changes on the horizon for the Ravens. At the kicker position, Tyler Loop seemingly has the spot locked down, but after he missed a game-winning field goal against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 18 that would have sent Baltimore to the playoffs, it sounds like his spot with the team may not be secure.

Ravens Could Add Competition for Tyler Loop

The Ravens selected Loop in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, and he had big shoes to fill, as he was tasked with coming in and replacing Justin Tucker. For the most part, Loop held his own, as he hit 30 of his 34 field goal attempts in his rookie campaign, while also making 44 of his 46 extra-point attempts.

Everything fell apart in Week 18, as Loop could not convert a 44-yard field goal against the Steelers that would have sent his team to the playoffs. That kick started an offseason full of change, with Baltimore and Harbaugh parting ways shortly thereafter. However, it seemed like the kicker position was still set to be Loop’s even in the wake of this painful mishap.

However, according to Minter’s latest comments, that may not actually end up being the case. When discussing Loop’s status with the team moving forward, Minter was curiously cryptic, even going as far as to hint at the possibility of the front office adding some competition for the second-year kicker before training camp gets underway.

“Truthfully, we’ll see how it goes,” Minter said of the kicker position, per Jamison Hensley of ESPN. “I think you could certainly add another guy there to have another guy in training camp, but we just have a lot of confidence in (Loop) going forward. He had a great rookie year. Obviously you’re judged by what happens, but we have a lot of confidence in him. He’s having a great offseason. He’s putting in a lot of time trying to improve.”

Should the Ravens Replace Tyler Loop?

What Loop’s NFL future will look like moving forward depends on how he responds to his missed kick against the Steelers. Sure, the Ravens may add some competition for Loop ahead of the new season, but this job is still his to lose. If he can prove last year’s pivotal miss was simply a blip on the radar, he’s going to remain Baltimore’s starting kicker.

There’s no doubt that Loop’s painful miss was a big blow for the Ravens, but it’s tough to say they would have gone on a Super Bowl run had they made it into the postseason. Instead, they got a head start in their quest to load up for the 2026 campaign, and if all goes according to plan, Loop will find himself in more than a few clutch moments with a chance to redeem himself in the future.
