One of the most talked-about storylines in this offseason has been around the starting quarterback role for the Cleveland Browns with Shedeur Sanders, Deshaun Watson, and Dillon Gabriel fighting for the job.
Cleveland Browns Shedeur Sanders
Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Myles Murphy (99) wraps up Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders (12) in the first quarter of the NFL Week 18 game between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Cleveland Browns at Paycor Stadium in Downtown Cincinnati on Sunday, Jan. 4, 2026.
ESPN analyst Tim Hasselbeck shared his opinion on the starting quarterback competition at Cleveland and ruled out Gabriel from the running as he discussed which one of Sanders and Watson would be the man for the franchise in 2026.
Hasselbeck highlighted that the Browns need to rebuild at quarterback and said that if he doesn’t believe head coach Todd Monken would “live and die” with this quarterback room.
Talking about the 2026 season. Hesselbeck said he doesn’t think Watson has a shot at QB1 as the veteran quarterback has been away from the game for so long, highlighting his two Achilles injuries and the fact that his lockerroom credibility has been compromised because of the past.
“A losing record as a starting rookie QB awhile using the disparaging 5th RD pick narrative when literally every Rookie QB last year had a losing record. The real narrative is how does a 5th RD pick have a better record than a 3rd RD pick and a former SB champion w/o reps.” one fan reacted.
“Now@ESPNNFL is definitely antagonizing Shedeur and his fans. They know there are certain people on their media roster that has a strong dislike for Shedeur but still choose these individuals to speak on Shedeur topics. They never asked Hasselface to speak on Myles Garrett.” another fan wrote.
“The Browns must really want to tank this season if they hand the job to Sanders. He finished with the worst qbr of all Quarterbacks that started more than 4 games. Tling tds he did throw were to running backs that did all the work. Embarrassing franchise to say the least.” another fan conspired.
“Lol y do ESPN always bring on Shadeur haters? They never provide any kind of balance. Jus an echo chamber. Dis clown tries to act like he doesn’t understand dat da only reason your even discussing dis is bcuz of dat 5th rd pick with a losing record.” another fan highlighted.
“@tthasselbeck can kick rocks. Bookmarked his comment calling Shedeur a backup & less just months ago in season. Will repost when he proves ’em wrong. Tired of backup QBs talking like they were great. GTFOH.” another fan added.

Todd Monken Offers Insight Into Quarterback Competition Between Shedeur Sanders, Deshaun Watson and Dillon Gabriel
Todd Monken was recently asked about how the reps would be divided between the three quarterbacks once the training starts at the Cleveland Browns facility, after which he revealed that the franchise will be allocating the reps to the players they feel would give them the best chance to win.
Monken also added that the franchise will be making that decision on the basis of what they have seen in the past and how the 2025 season ended.
When asked whether that means Sanders is the one that would be getting the most reps, Monken said he isn’t ready to answer that question yet.
The Browns will start their training for the 2026 on 7th April 2026.
