Southampton couldn't resist reminding Piers Morgan of his reaction to the FA Cup quarter-finals as he said "great draw for Arsenal" - only to see them bomb out of the competition at the Championship side.

It has been a fortnight to forget for the Gunners, who have seen their quadruple hopes dashed. After losing the Carabao Cup final to Manchester City they've now seen their FA Cup hopes go up in smoke, losing 2-1 to Southampton.

The Saints took the lead in the first-half through Ross Stewart. Shea Charles then scored a late winner after Viktor Gyokeres had got Arsenal back on level terms. Despite playing lower league opposition the Premier League leaders couldn't get the job done as another trophy opportunity passed them by.

In the aftermath of the result Southampton went back and quoted one of Morgan's social media posts, where he clearly thought Arsenal were looking good value to progress.

Throughout the contest the broadcaster was clearly getting frustrated, and did one post where he seemed to question the team's desire to win silverware. He wrote: "Do you actually want to win any trophies @Arsenal? Such a poor, lacklustre half."

It comes after Morgan himself had made several ambitious statements, which began with claiming Arsenal had created a group for the ages. He said: "Who in world football, I'm serious, I'm serious, who in world football right now is going to beat us? We are the best squad, we are the best squad assembled in the history of world club football."

In light of the Carabao Cup loss he then suggested that another quadruple was still on the cards. That consisted of the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and the relegation of Tottenham - but the FA Cup has now passed them by after their shock loss at St Mary's.

Mikel Arteta is under pressure to get over the line following several near misses. They remain in control in the league, holding a nine point lead over City having played a game more. In the Champions League they face Sporting Lisbon in the quarter-finals.

The Arsenal boss said after their setback: "You have to 'stop' when you're winning, winning, and winning, like we've been doing, so that you don't think you're better than you are because you're winning. It's very clear - we've talked about it many times - you have to be very stable [in the Premier League], in any competition that you play, and we will continue to do that."
