Clement on Schlupp City future and Amass United call

Schlupp started the Championship opening day defeat against Millwall, following his free agent signing on a one-year deal, but has only had three more league starts ahead of an Easter Monday return trip to the Lions.

A long-term hamstring injury limited the 33-year-old to only one appearance under Clement, and the clock is now ticking to the end of Carrow Road deal.

The Belgian plans to use City’s run-in to make final decisions on a number of his current squad.

“It's a little bit too early. Like I said last week, it's going to be a really important several weeks now until the end of the season, to see players, to see also how everybody reacts,” he said, speaking at Colney on Sunday ahead of the trip to Millwall.

“We have a lot of big games against teams who play for promotion, for play-offs, so we can see where players are for the moment, and who can grow to the level where we want to get the club.

“Jeff’s been out really long. It's the first time that I see him, so that says enough; not seeing him as a person, of course, but on the pitch with us. He still needs some time, for sure, to get his rhythm back. he had a big injury from before my time, so I don't know the circumstances of that moment, but he lost a lot of time because of that.

"He's a good guy. He's been good in the dressing room, in the gym. He helps the young players. He's one of the senior guys in this dressing room. Also, he's really professional and says the right things towards the players. So a lot of positives about that. But I want to see a bit more on the pitch now, of course.”

Schlupp and fellow left-sided defensive options Ben Chrisene and Lucien Mahovo have all been sidelined during this campaign.

That prompted Norwich to make a January loan move for Harry Amass, who himself picked up a hamstring injury after one appearance and returned to Manchester United to undergo his recovery.

“We wanted it differently, but they are the owners of the player, and they decided for him not to come here for his rehab and not to have Harry here in these weeks,” said Clement. “We wish it was a different situation. I don't want to go into what Harry wanted, because that's for him to say.

"They are the owners of the player, and they decided to keep him there until the end of the season. But in this very short time, for sure, he made (a good impression) but we will see in the end of the season what we're going do in that position.

"So we are, of course, in the club, busy with it but I want to be focused on Ben and Lucien and to get them fit and at their best level.”
