The Minnesota Vikings signed former Steelers CB James Pierre from free agency a little less than a month ago.

The signing made a ton of sense on the surface-level. The Steelers run a similar defense to what Minnesota runs in theory. Additionally, Pierre spent time in Pittsburgh with Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores in 2022.

However, Pierre wasn’t a super-hot name among the possibilities for the Vikings at corner unless you really did your homework. More attention was on the Tariq Woolen’s and Cordale Flott’s of the world.

Instead, Minnesota looked in the tier or two below, and have a major return-on-investment opportunity in Pierre.

Tyler Forness of AtoZ Sports painted a wonderful picture for Vikings fans to comprehend the value of the Pierre signing.

“A two-year, $8.5 million contract isn’t a lot to have on the salary cap, but the Vikings aren’t exactly flush with salary cap space, meaning they need to be aware of where every dollar goes. NFL insider Aaron Wilson has the contract details, and it’s good for the Vikings.

$2.5 million signing bonus

$1.215 million salary in 2026 (guaranteed)

$3.565 million salary in 2027

$510k in per-game roster bonuses each season

$100k workout bonus each year”

Forness then goes on to give his opinion on the Pierre signing as a whole after giving the details of the contract.

“That’s very palatable for the Vikings. Plus, they will be able to subtract $885k from the salary cap, as that is the smallest contract on the roster. It’s a very good contract for a player who could give the Vikings starting level cornerback play in a nickel defense.

Overall, this is a slam dunk contract for the Vikings with at most $2 million dead if they want to cut bait after the season is over. Even if they don’t and he struggles at cornerback, Pierre has proven to be a good special teams player.

*Grade: A-*“

It’s likely that the Minnesota Vikings have gotten a gem of this free agency class. Whether or not they will pursue another CB this offseason via free agency or the draft will only be told by time.

Minnesota’s ‘Dream’ 2026 NFL Draft Scenario Revealed

Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report shared his opinion on what Minnesota’s “dream” draft scenario would entail.

“Injury concerns push Jermod McCoy to the Vikings at No. 18. Even getting their choice of McNeil-Warren or Thieneman would be great. They need to stock up on secondary talent to take on Caleb Williams, Jared Goff and Jordan Love.”

Tennessee’s Jermod McCoy is a stud prospect at corner. Even though he missed the entire 2025 season, he is still in conversation for many people’s CB1 in this class. McCoy impressed at Tennessee’s Pro Day with a 4.38 second 40-yard-dash, 38-inch vertical, and 10’7″ broad jump.

Here are some quick hitters on Jermod McCoy’s strengths and weaknesses from NFLDraftBuzz.

Strengths

Elite ball skills, great spatial awareness

Great instincts in zone coverage

Great route recognition, doesn’t bite often on double moves

Natural fluidity in coverage and aggression at the catch-point

Natural ability to press and mirror opposing receivers

Weaknesses

Torn ACL in January 2025 caused him to miss entire 2025 season

Tendency to get grabby when beaten downfield

Questionable tackling in space

Inconsistencies in engaging in run support

McCoy’s fall to 18 would be greatly beneficial for the secondary-needy Minnesota Vikings.
