The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are facing a major stadium renovation that could cost $1 billion.

The NFL franchise’s ownership is set to meet with the Tampa Sports Authority, which owns Raymond James Stadium, where the Buccaneers have played since its opening in 1998, to discuss a potential 10-figure renovation that would allow it to host the Super Bowl and College Football Playoff national championship in the future.

It comes after a March Madness national anthem sparked fury as the NCAA was called out before the Final Four began. At a time when many NFL franchises are pursuing major stadium upgrades or entirely new builds – the Buffalo Bills are set to unveil a new home in 2026, while the Kansas City Chiefs are building one from scratch – the Buccaneers are the latest team nearing formal plans for a significant overhaul of their own venue.

With prime real estate in Florida and a location well-suited for marquee events like the Super Bowl and College Football Playoff national championship, which are both held annually at neutral sites, Buccaneers ownership is exploring upgrades less than a decade after completing a separate $160 million renovation.

Between 2016 and 2018, the Glazer family, owners of the franchise since 1995, invested heavily in improvements across Raymond James Stadium, including upgraded video boards, locker rooms, concourses, the team store, and luxury suites.

Those enhancements helped position the stadium to host Super Bowl LV in 2021, when the Tom Brady-led Buccaneers defeated Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs 31–9. It marked Tampa’s third time hosting the NFL’s championship game after doing so previously in 2001 and 2009.

Beyond the Super Bowl, Raymond James Stadium has attracted several major events, from college football bowl games, to international soccer matches, concerts, and other music festivals.

While exact details of the latest renovation plans have not been revealed, the scope is expected to be substantial.

Reports indicate the Bucs will be required to relocate during construction, with Orlando’s Camping World Stadium the leading option. That is where the Jacksonville Jaguars will play their home games in the 2027 season while their own stadium renovations take place, and Tampa Bay could follow suit soon after.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, the planned upgrades to Raymond James Stadium are expected to be “major,” with a reported price tag of around $1 billion underscoring the scale of the project.

Once plans are finalized, it could be another season or two before the renovations actually begin taking place.

From there, the Buccaneers would have to wait until at least 2030 for a chance to next host the Super Bowl, with SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, and Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas already due to host the next three editions of the big game.

As for the CFP national championship, Raymond James Stadium is currently slated to host the 2028-29 title game on Jan. 22, 2029, a potential indication that renovations are expected to be complete by then.
