Opinion: Chelsea's view of'spectacular'footballer is exactly why they can't sell him

Enzo Fernandez is proving to be a bit of a headache for Chelsea right now, with the midfielder refusing to shut down speculation about his future.

Instead, the midfielder has fuelled it. Amid rumours about a possible move to Real Madrid this summer, Fernandez has revealed that he likes the Spanish capital and would love to live there one day.

Chelsea, however, do not look ready to grant Fernandez his wish just yet, nor do they have to given the length of his contract.

Chelsea think Enzo Fernandez is one of the best midfielders in the world: they’re right

According to TEAMtalk, Chelsea are determined to keep hold of Fernandez as the likes of Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain continue to circle.

The outlet claims that the Blues view the 25-year-old as one of the best midfielders in the world right now.

Early in his Chelsea career, it would have been hard to agree with that statement. However, fast forward to the present, and it is more than fair to put Fernandez in that category. The Argentine can do things other midfielders cannot.

For example, what really makes Fernandez stand out is his goalscoring ability. This season, he has scored 12 goals in 46 appearances, which is a good return for a midfielder.

Of course, Fernandez has played a lot of games closer to goal as a No.10. That has obviously helped him.

When the Argentina international has been utilised as a No.8, though, he has still remained a goal threat. From that position, he has made late runs into the box and scored goals in a similar manner to Frank Lampard in his prime. Few midfielders are able to do that.

In terms of his overall technical ability, Fernandez is a very good midfielder. He can shoot, pass, receive the ball and do much more.

“He’s a spectacular kid,” Lionel Messi said via Goal when discussing his Argentina teammate during the 2022 World Cup.

Real Madrid may very well be keen on signing Fernandez and bringing him to the Santiago Bernabeu this summer. But Chelsea should not sell him to the Spanish giants, especially given that he has a contract until 2032.

Fernandez is a rare commodity in football, while Chelsea are under no pressure to sell the former Benfica man.
