Chelsea Get Major Boost As Sky Reporter Confirms PL Rival Has Withdrawn From £35M Transfer Battle

Chelsea now have one fewer rival in the race to sign FC Cologne winger Said El Mala, according to reports.

Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg has confirmed that Brighton are “currently out” of contention after being put off by the German’s asking price.

The Seagulls have previously tabled bids for El Mala, and were regarded as favourites for the player’s signature until recently.

However, Plettenberg claims they are not prepared to match Cologne’s valuation, which is said to be higher than €40m (£35m).

Why is there so much hype around El Mala?

The 19-year-old has hit double figures for goals in his first season playing in the Bundesliga. He is also two-footed, so he is equally comfortable playing off both wings.

El Mala has come very close to securing his first senior cap for Germany this campaign as well. Head coach Julian Nagelsmann named him on the bench for a World Cup qualifier against Luxembourg back in November, but he didn’t get on the pitch.

During the most recent international break, the forward scored for Germany’s Under 21s during a European Under 21 Championship qualifier, helping to secure a 2-0 win over Greece.

Chelsea still face competition for the player

Plettenberg has said that “other English clubs” are holding talks with Cologne about signing El Mala. His remarks suggest more than one team is involved in negotiations.

It has previously been reported that, in addition to the Blues, Newcastle hold a strong interest in the teenager.

At the time of writing, El Mala’s future remains undecided, but it looks like he could cost close to £40m, if Cologne remain steadfast on their price tag.

It would be a lot to pay for a young player, but Chelsea’s previous track record indicates they would not be afraid to splash the cash if they feel he has sufficient ability.
