Radek Vitek is the biggest success story of Man Utd’s loan system so far this season, but he has a cautionary tale to learn from.
The loan to Bristol City couldn’t have gone better for Radek Vitek, who has established himself as one of the best in the Championship despite his team’s struggles.
Now, with Roy Hodgson at the helm, he’s also getting the proper “English Football” experience, which will stand him in good stead when he returns to Man Utd.
However, he must not get carried away because, before there was Vitek, United had another goalkeeping prodigy with the world at his feet, before it started falling apart.

The curious case of Elyh Harrison
When Vitek was plugging away on loan in Austria, Elyh Harrison was turning heads at Old Trafford with a brilliant loan spell at Chester.
Granted, Chester played non-league football at the time, but Harrison looked like he was ready to play at a level far higher than that.
United recalled him from Chester, and with the world at his feet, he was sent on loan to League Two side Shrewsbury at the start of this season.

That’s when things started to snowball for him, as he picked up a minor injury to start his spell.
He did get introduced to the first XI, but he played nine games for them, never tasting victory, and his last game was a 6-1 defeat to Wolves.
United opted to recall him in January this year, and he wasn’t sent back on loan like Ethan Wheatley, whose recall was clearly to send him to a better team instead.
Harrison stayed with the U21s side, a step back from senior football, but there was no respite.
His last, and only game for the U21s, since his recall was on February 7, was a 1-1 draw against Derby.
He hasn’t even made the squad since then, let alone play, and with no injury update, Harrison has fallen off the radar completely, and rather drastically, considering how highly rated he was just this time last season.
An uncertain future for Harrison
The fall in fortunes couldn’t have come at a worse time for Harrison, because his contract at Old Trafford expires in the summer.

As seen recently with Jaydan Kamason’s contract extension, United are open to giving youngsters time and space to develop, as long as they show signs of progress.
Harrison has fallen behind rapidly at a bad time, and it is leading to an uncertain future for him.
As it stands, it’s unlikely that Harrison gets a new contract, which means he will have to test the jungle of lower-league football in England.
Furthermore, he will have to do so, having not played a single game in months, so rhythm, fluency, and match fitness will all be missing.
Man Utd fans will always wish Harrison the best, because he genuinely looked like a future first-team player once upon a time, but time moves quickly in football.
For Harrison, it seems to have moved the wrong way.
