Chelsea are “closely following” Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, according to reports in Switzerland.

4-4-2.com claim that the 28-year-old is attracting the interest of several teams, including Bayern Munich, Newcastle and the Blues.

Kobel has been part of a Dortmund defence that has conceded only 28 goals this season, giving them the second-best defensive record in the Bundesliga behind Bayern.

The Swiss international’s contract has two years left to run, and Dortmund will need to make a decision soon on whether they want to extend his current deal or offload him to the highest bidder.

Kobel has been described as “one of the best”

Dortmund managing director Lars Ricken was full of praise for the club’s number one when speaking about the keeper last year.

At the time, the Bundesliga side had just signed Diant Ramaj from Ajax, but when it was suggested that the German was being lined up as Kobel’s long-term successor, Ricken replied:

“In Gregor Kobel, we have one of the best in Europe. Behind him are [Alexander] Meyer and [Marcel] Lotka. We are in a great position there.”

Chelsea have tried to sign the goalkeeper before

The Blues have a longstanding interest in Kobel. Initial links first emerged before the 2023 summer transfer window, but no deal materialised.

Reports in the German media suggested that the Blues did seriously consider an approach for the shot-stopper last May too, but it seems as if the price tag put them off.

Kobel was valued at around €60m (£52m) at the time, and the decision was made to go after AC Milan’s Mike Maignan instead. Ultimately, that deal didn’t go anywhere either, and Robert Sanchez remained the club’s first choice.
