Eagles' expected trade candidate could land with Steelers, Packers or Rams

The Philadelphia Eagles have a clear trade candidate and we could see him landing with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Green Bay Packers or Los Angeles Rams.

That trade candidate is quarterback Tanner McKee, who The Athletic's Zach Berman expects to be moved at some point.

Berman's expectation comes from the fact that the Eagles recently acquired Andy Dalton in a trade with the Carolina Panthers, a move that didn't make much sense since McKee was already tabbed to be the backup to Jalen Hurts.

"I’d argue that it doesn’t make sense to have a 38-year-old Dalton as the third quarterback, and still think the Eagles could flip McKee for a future pick, although the quarterback chairs are quickly filling up," Berman wrote.

We agree with Berman here.

While it's not expensive to keep both players, it would be odd to see the Eagles do so after McKee hasn't clearly given the team a reason to ditch him as the QB2.

When we have seen McKee on the field, the 25-year-old has shown promise, and so much so that rumors suggest he has drawn trade interest around the league as recently as this offseason.

We tend to believe the Eagles signing Dalton is a strong hint that Philly will act on that interest and move McKee in due time, perhaps around the 2026 NFL Draft.

Why Steelers, Packers, Rams could have interest

The Aaron Rodgers saga drags on in Pittsburgh and when it ends remains to be seen.

And, we can't say with 100% certainty it'll end with Rodgers coming back instead of choosing to retire.

If that happens, the Steelers will be left with the unproven Will Howard and a career backup in Mason Rudolph.

Safe to say, the Steelers will need more competition in that scenario.

In Green Bay, the Packers are without a solidified backup, with guys like Desmond Ridder and Kyle McCord set to compete for the backup job behind Jordan Love after Malik Willis left for the Miami Dolphins in free agency.

Adding McKee as a backup makes sense for the Packers, who could then look to flip McKee at some point down the road.

Entering the offseason, the expectation was the Rams would simply re-sign Jimmy Garoppolo and have him continue to back up Matthew Stafford.

But Jimmy G remains available and it isn't clear if he's actually intent on returning to Los Angeles. If not, a Super Bowl contender like Los Angeles can't rely on an unproven Stetson Bennett.

The Rams might be the best landing spot for McKee of the three mentioned here, as Stafford is basically year-to-year at this point and McKee would be in line to take over as the starter in 2027 if Stafford hangs up his cleats.
