Chelsea board sent clear message about signing£43M Premier League star

Former Premier League defender William Gallas has urged Chelsea not to pursue a potential summer move for Tottenham Hotspur and Argentina centre-back Cristian Romero, amid ongoing transfer speculation surrounding the 27-year-old.

Romero, who has established himself as one of the Premier League’s marquee defenders since joining Tottenham from Atalanta, has voiced frustration with his current situation at the north London club.

While still committed to helping Spurs avoid relegation, the Argentine has acknowledged that this season has not been his best, fuelling talk of a summer exit should opportunities arise elsewhere.

Despite such links, Gallas has weighed in with a clear warning for CHELSEA: avoid targeting Romero in the upcoming window. The former Blues and Spurs player argues that Romero’s recent form, disciplinary record, and current mental state make the Argentine an ill-fit for Chelsea’s rebuilding project.

Supporters and pundits have also questioned Romero’s suitability given his inconsistent displays and the defensive issues that have plagued Chelsea this term. Gallas, though, urged his former club not to consider a move for Tottenham captain Cristian Romero, suggesting the Argentine defender too often puts his team ‘in trouble’.

‘Christian Romero is a winner but he could not be the new Thiago Silva at CHELSEA,’ Gallas said.

‘As a player and a captain, Christian Romero has a different style. What you need is one experienced player who can control every team and when you play alongside Romero I think a player might feel less secure, especially when you are young.

‘You need players who won’t take a red card for a stupid foul. For me, Romero has to improve in this part because he puts his teams in trouble.

‘Maybe Chelsea need to look for centre-backs who can bring you all these things to be calm and have that security to be a good captain at the back.’
