The NFL has opted not to comment on Troy Aikman's new role with the Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins have made a lot of moves this offseason. Big-name stars like Tua Tagovailoa, Tyreek Hill, and Jaylen Waddle are no longer in town, while head coach Jeff Hafley and general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan are headlining a new-look regime for the Dolphins. The team knows it must undergo a long-term rebuild, and it has taken the steps necessary to get things underway in that department.

One of the more overlooked moves Miami has made this offseason involved legendary Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman joining the team’s front office. Similar to Tom Brady and the Las Vegas Raiders, Aikman’s broadcasting gig with “Monday Night Football” has raised some concerns with folks, but it doesn’t appear to be a situation that the NFL is particularly worried about.

NFL Refuses to Comment on Troy Aikman’s Role with the Dolphins

Aikman is most well-known for his 12-year career in the NFL as a star quarterback with the Cowboys. Aikman led Dallas to three Super Bowl championships, solidifying his status as one of the greatest players at his position in the history of the league. Since calling it a career as a player, Aikman has transitioned into the world of sports media, where he’s become one of the most respected color commentators in the industry.

Early on this offseason, reports emerged indicating that Aikman would be assisting the Dolphins in their search for both a new general manager and head coach. Initially, it seemed like that was all Aikman would be doing with Miami, but he will continue working in a relatively undefined “special consultant” role with the team’s front office.

Given his work with “Monday Night Football,” some folks believe there’s a conflict of interest for Aikman now that he is helping the Dolphins out. The league has a similar problem with Brady, who is a minority owner for the Raiders, while also serving as a color commentator for Fox. When asked about Aikman’s role, though, the NFL opted not to comment on his situation.

“Aikman’s short-term stint as a consultant for Miami’s G.M. and head-coaching hires (both of which they may have nailed) has morphed into an ongoing role that has yet to be fully defined,” Florio wrote. “In response to Aikman’s latest comments (about his role), the NFL has declined comment.”

Does Troy Aikman’s Role with the Dolphins Cause Issues for the NFL?

The problem with Aikman working for the Dolphins, in addition to his broadcasting duties, is that he could receive inside information from teams across the league, which could then be used to help out the Dolphins. The league put certain restrictions in place for Brady last year, given his work with Las Vegas, so Aikman will likely be subjected to those same restrictions moving forward.

Considering how the Raiders finished with the worst record in the NFL last year, it doesn’t seem like Brady’s work as a broadcaster gave them any sort of advantage. If more and more people follow in Brady and Aikman’s footsteps, though, that could create some real problems for the league. For now, it is simply sliding this issue under the rug, but it’s clear this is going to have to be properly dealt with at some point down the line.
