Giants make uninspiring signing of former Bears, Packers guard with 65 career starts

One of the biggest remaining roster holes the New York Giants have to fill was at guard, and the team made a signing at the position on Monday.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Giants are signing former Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers guard Lucas Patrick to a one-year contract. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"The Giants are adding to their O-line as they get ready to begin their offseason conditioning program, signing guard and center Lucas Patrick to a 1-year deal," Rapoport reported on Monday.

As of right now, Patrick is in line to start at left guard for the Giants. New York did not re-up with Greg Van Roten in free agency and hasn't made a more significant signing than the 65-game starter up until this point.

Patrick spent last season with the Cincinnati Bengals and got the start in Week 1 before suffering an injury. Patrick never returned to the starting lineup upon his return from injury.

In the year before that, Patrick started in 10 games for the New Orleans Saints and didn't give up a single sack and surrendered 10 pressures in those contests while supplying Pro Football Focus grades of 60.3 in pass-blocking and 66.3 in run-blocking.

Is Lucas Patrick a starter?

Patrick's career has been marred by plenty of inconsistency and he's better suited as a versatile depth piece than a starter. The 32-year-old has played snaps at both guard spots and center during his career.

Truth be told, this is a really uninspiring signing for the Giants if they are planning to have him start, as New York needs to do better for their young quarterback, Jaxon Dart.

Now, if Patrick is being viewed as a backup, then it looks much better.

We fully expect the Giants to make more moves at guard beyond this one, whether that be via free agency, the draft, or both.
