All-Pro defender requests trade before Giants’ first workout under John Harbaugh

The New York Giants are preparing for their first NFL voluntary workout under new head coach John Harbaugh.

Harbaugh will get a first look at his players on Tuesday, April 7, when the Giants gather at Quest Diagnostics Training Center. New York hired Harbaugh after he spent 18 seasons and won a Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens.

One key player who won’t be there is All-Pro defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence. ESPN NFL reporter Adam Schefter posted on X that Lawrence is seeking a trade and won’t attend.

ESPN sources: Giants All-Pro defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence has requested a trade and he will not be participating in the team’s off-season workout program that opens Tuesday.

Lawrence, a seven-year pro, and the Giants have been trying to negotiate a new deal during the past two offseasons, Schefter reported. Lawrence is set to make $20 million this season and has two years left on his contract.

The Giants drafted Lawrence 17th overall out of Clemson in the 2019 NFL Draft. He earned second-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors after the 2022 and 2023 seasons and added a third Pro Bowl nod in 2024.

However, Lawrence’s numbers dipped in 2025. In 17 starts, he recorded career lows in tackles (31) and sacks (0.5). Lawrence’s four tackles for loss represented the second-fewest of his career.

Still, Harbaugh insisted Lawrence is a key piece of the Giants’ defense moving forward. Overall, the 28-year-old has 30.5 career sacks and 341 career tackles.

“How important is he? Really important,” Harbaugh said about Lawrence in February, per Schefter’s report. “He’s a cornerstone football player — not really a cornerstone, more like the middle stone. … He’s a very big stone, and he’s a very active, athletic one.”

With or without Lwarence, Harbaugh faces the task of lifting the franchise out of a deep hole. New York owns one winning record and one playoff appearance since 2018. The Giants finished last in the NFC East with a 4-13 record in 2025.

New York has the No. 5 pick in the first round of the NFL draft, which begins April 23 in Pittsburgh.
