Arsenal have been linked with a rising star of African football - but will they really spend £61m on a teenage striker this summer?

While Arsenal’s dream of a quadruple was being whittled down to hopes of a double (or perhaps prayers for absolutely anything) over the course of the past few weeks, their lack of cutting edge up front became increasingly concerning – and if recent reports have any truth to them, it’s an issue which may be addressed quite aggressively in the summer transfer market.

According to both Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg and German transfer expert Christian Falk (as reported by TEAMtalk), the Gunners are taking a close look at 19-year-old Bayer Leverkusen striker Christian Kofane ahead of a potential summer bid. One of the breakthrough stars of the recent Africa Cup of Nations, the Cameroonian youngster wouldn’t come cheap – but could he be the answer to Arsenal’s attacking prayers?

Why Arsenal are being linked with Bayer Leverkusen striker Christian Kofane

Kofane’s rise has been meteoric. Two years ago, he was an essentially unknown teenager settling in to a new life in Spain having moved to Albacete from his home country. Now, he’s scoring goals in the Bundesliga and is being hailed as Cameroon’s brightest talent after some impressive outings on Africa’s biggest stage.

The two goals he scored at AFCON 2025 highlighted his skills rather neatly: The first, a 25-yard cracker against Mozambique; the second, a superb near-post header against South Africa engineered by a perfectly-timed late run that left the opposing defence helpless.

Kofane’s combination of precise finishing and superb late movement in the box has made him a headache for defenders in Spain and Germany alike. He seems to possess an almost instinctive understanding of where centre-backs least expect him to pop up, and a respectable burst of acceleration with which to exploit that knowledge. Throw in some remarkably deft finishing skills, and the foundations for a lethal centre-forward are firmly in place.

So far, Kofane has scored seven goals in 39 games for Leverkusen since signing from Albacete for just over €5m (£4.4m) last summer, and provided eight assists – a very healthy return when factoring in the fact that he has only played a full 90 minutes on four occasions for his current club. Given his age, in particular, his returns have been rather remarkable.

There are still rough edges to polish off his game, as one might expect with a teenager, and he has been responsible for a few frustrating misses despite the technique and composure he has shown in front of goal on a number of occasions. The talent, however, is evident, and elite sides are starting to take notice.

Not only are Arsenal allegedly monitoring the young striker, but Real Madrid have also been mentioned as potential suitors. Florian Plettenberg suggests that his price tag could climb as high as €70m (£61m). But is it likely that Arsenal strike a deal this summer?

Will Arsenal bid for Kofane – or is this just gossip?

Plettenberg’s name won’t inspire much confidence among the Arsenal fanbase as a whole – this is, after all, the same journalist who broke the erroneous story which suggested that the Gunners had bid for Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali at the end of the January transfer window.

On this occasion, however, Plettenberg isn’t the only source in Germany reporting the story, and that adds rather more heft to the rumour. With Arsenal believed to be looking for ways to replace Gabriel Jesus – who is expected to leave over the summer – and to find potential alternatives to the inconsistent Viktor Gyökeres, a deal for a rising star like Kofane, who could serve a rotational role as he develops but who could also make an immediate impact, makes plenty of sense.

Whether they’d be prepared to meet Leverkusen’s alleged asking price is less certain. There are other priorities heading into the summer, with a left winger almost essential and a new central midfielder also on the shopping list. The amount that they spend addressing those needs will influence how much they’re prepared to splash on a young forward.

Real Madrid’s alleged interest may not be too much of a threat. They are looking to continue adding young attacking talent over the summer window but are mostly looking for more budget-conscious signings that could be profitable in the future, and already need to consider how best to incorporate Endrick and Gonzalo García into the first team. It’s a little tricky to see where Kofane might fit in.

It’s not yet clear, of course, that the player himself is in any rush to leave Leverkusen, especially to join a club who may well offer him fewer opportunities to start matches. It’s unlikely that he would have started 10 league matches at the Emirates this season, for instance.

In short, it’s hard to say whether Arsenal are truly likely to make a bid for Kofane, and hard to gauge whether they would be successful if they did. It may be that they go no further than monitoring the young Cameroonian. But given his talent and rapid growth over the past couple of years, it would also be entirely unsurprising if a side of Arsenal’s stature did take a chance on his unquestioned talent.
