One insider weighs in on what the Giants could seek in exchange for Dexter Lawrence.

On April 6th, reports emerged that New York Giants defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence has requested a trade. Following this news, one insider tossed around what a potential framework could look like.

Lawrence and the Giants have been at odds regarding a new contract, and things could be approaching the point of no return. Still without a sizable extension, the 28-year-old is eyeing a change of scenery.

As trade chatter begins around Lawrence, insider Connor Hughes weighed in with his current information on the situation. After speaking with teams league-wide, he noted that the asking price is a first-round pick in an upcoming draft or future late-round selections.

The need for a new contract,

Since being drafted 17th overall by the Giants in 2019, Lawrence has blossomed into a highly impactful defensive lineman. He has racked up at least four-and-a-half sacks in three of the last four seasons and garnered a trio of Pro-Bowl nods in that stretch.

In light of his trade request, only time will tell if the two sides will work out a contract or if the front office decides to cut ties with the homegrown talent.

Dexter Lawrence Trade Seems Unlikely Despite Recent Trade Request

As a multi-time Pro-Bowler, Lawrence is sure to garner trade interest amid his latest request. That said, at this moment in time, it doesn’t appear that a deal will surface in the near future.

After reporting on what the asking price for Lawrence could be, Hughes added another notable tidbit. Based on the conversations he had on the topic, the consensus is that the Giants aren’t going to their standout D-lineman.

Most of the teams I touched base with doubt he actually gets dealt.

One driving force in this stance is Lawrence’s current contract. He is under his current deal for the next two seasons, not hitting the open market until 2027. Seeing that the team still has multiple years of control, the front office isn’t under a lot of pressure to execute a trade. They also have wiggle room to end this saga by keeping Lawrence in New York beyond 2027.

Skip Bayless Thinks Giants Missed Window for Valuable Return for Dexter Lawrence

Reports suggest that the Giants are confident they can get value for Lawrence despite his trade request. However, one analyst thinks they’ll be forced to settle for a lesser return package.

During Monday’s installment of “The Arena: Gridiron,” Skip Bayless reacted to the Giants’ latest trade news. He thinks acquiring a first-round pick is off the table and believes a third-round selection is a more likely outcome if he’s moved.

“Even though Dexter Lawrence has made three Pro-Bowls and two second-team All-Pros, he’s never scared me as a Cowboys fan,” Bayless said. “Once upon a time they could have gotten a first for him. Now I don’t think they’ll get maybe a third for him because someone is gonna have to turn right around and give the man his money, and it’s gonna be a lot of money.”

As they navigate their situation with Lawrence, the Giants are set to begin their ramp-up for the 2026 campaign. The first day of offseason workouts is slated for April 7th, with voluntary minicamp set to begin on the 21st.
