Seven years later, the shockwaves of Andrew Luck’s retirement still hit differently. Just when it felt like the story had settled, fresh claims dragged it back into the spotlight—this time with accusations aimed at Chris Ballard and how things ended with the Indianapolis Colts.
However, Luck is not letting that narrative slide. In rare fashion, the former Colts franchise QB stepped in to set the record straight firmly, clearly, and without leaving room for interpretation.
Andrew Luck Responds To Eric Ebron’s Claims About Chris Ballard Ultimatum

On April 4, 2026, Luck directly responded to comments made by former teammate Eric Ebron. The tight end had alleged on his “On My Soul” podcast that Ballard gave Luck an ultimatum during the 2019 preseason: play through injury or risk being replaced.
That version of events quickly gained traction. Except Luck wasted no time pushing back, and his response was decisive.
“Chris and I had a wonderful partnership, especially through my decision to retire, and we remain close. Any notion of internal pressures that influenced my decision are without merit.”

Ebron described a tense situation, claiming Ballard told Luck:

That is as clear as it gets—no grey area, no drama, just a flat-out denial. However, context matters here. Back on August 24, 2019, Luck’s retirement stunned the league. He was 29, coming off a Pro Bowl season, and had just led the Colts back to the playoffs. Yet behind the scenes, the toll was building, physically and mentally.
Luck had been stuck in a brutal cycle: injury, rehab, setback, repeat. Shoulder issues, lacerated kidneys, concussions, and calf/ankle issues—it never really stopped. When he finally walked away, he explained it simply: that the constant grind had drained the joy out of football.
Fast forward to now, and Ebron’s comments added a new layer to that story. However, they also come with their own context. Ebron’s relationship with Ballard reportedly deteriorated after his time with the Colts, especially following injury-related disputes during the 2019 season. That tension may have shaped his perspective.
Meanwhile, Ballard declined to comment publicly on the claims. However, he does not need to, not with Luck stepping in the way he did.
The bigger picture is that this moment reinforces something that has always been consistent since 2019. The 36-year-old’s decision was personal. It was not forced, it was not political, but it was about health, peace of mind, and stepping away on his own terms.
And even now, years removed from the game, the 6’4″ former quarterback is still protecting that truth.
