Chelsea stance on reversing Enzo Fernandez's suspension for Man City clash - journalist

Liam Rosenior is set to stand firm on Enzo Fernandez’s two-match suspension, with the player’s camp resigned to the fact that he will play no part in the Premier League encounter with Manchester City.

Despite an internal plea from several senior teammates who view Enzo Fernandez as essential for the battle against Manchester City, the club appears focused on upholding their decision, following his recent comments regarding a potential move to Real Madrid.

Liam Rosenior has maintained that his personal relationship with the vice-captain is in a good place, but he has shown no indication that the disciplinary measure will be cut short.

With the Manchester City clash seen as a big chance to salvage Chelsea’s hopes for a top-five finish, the decision to stick with the ban could be a significant gamble by Rosenior.

Liam Rosenior is leaning towards keeping the Enzo Fernandez suspension

Having already watched from the stands during the 7–0 victory over Port Vale, Fernandez himself is reportedly pessimistic about a late reprieve.

According to Veronica Brunati, Enzo Fernandez and his camp believe that coach Liam Rosenior will not lift his suspension, meaning he’s expected to miss the clash against Manchester City.

The player shares the same pessimism regarding his availability, with the situation now seen as virtually decided by the Chelsea group.

Of course, there’s no official word from the club right now and things can soon change, but either way, you can’t help but feel Rosenior will get criticism, no matter the decision.

Who starts if no Enzo Fernandez?

In the absence of Enzo Fernandez, Liam Rosenior should lean on a midfield pivot consisting of Moises Caicedo and Andrey Santos against Manchester City.

Caicedo remains the defensive anchor, and Santos has emerged as the primary beneficiary of Fernandez’s suspension, putting in a brilliant performance against Port Vale.

Alternatively, Rosenior could opt for Romeo Lavia, who provides ball retention and a 94% passing accuracy, though his limited minutes this season suggest he may be utilised as a second-half stabiliser.

However, based on recent form and the manager’s trust, a Caicedo-Santos partnership appears the most likely solution.
