Paul Scholes has named nine players Manchester United should consider selling this summer.
No stranger to making headlines with his comments as a pundit since hanging up his boots in 2013, midfield legend Scholes has raised eyebrows on the latest episode of his podcast, ‘The Good, The Bad & The Football’, with some of his ‘sell’ suggestions.
United have endured a topsy-turvy season but the improvement - in terms of performance levels and results - has been remarkable since Michael Carrick replaced Ruben Amorim in January.
The Red Devils currently sit third in the Premier League table with seven matches remaining, leaving themselves with an excellent opportunity of securing Champions League football for the 2026-27 campaign.

Scholes Names Players Man Utd Should Axe
Despite that, Scholes says there are a host of players the club should axe this summer in order for the team to kick on and seriously challenge for silverware. These are the players Scholes thinks United should sell…
Noussair Mazraoui

The former Bayern Munich defender has impressed at times since joining Man Utd in 2024, but Scholes believes Amorim’s departure leaves the Morocco international surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.
He said: “Sell. I don’t know where he fits in. He’s been like a right-sided centre-half and they don’t play with three centre-halves anymore. if there’s three centre-halves then you’d probably have him as one of five or six but I think it’s probably time to let him go now.”
Harry Maguire

Harry Maguire deserves immense credit for the way he’s bounced back from fierce criticism and losing the United captaincy. However, Scholes would rather the club keep Matthijs de Ligt instead.
Per Football365, he said: “Look, I think he’s been really good and he’s brought himself back from the dead really. I think he’s been sensational with what he’s done, I’m so so pleased for him, but I’m thinking about a Manchester United team you want to win the league and the Champions League and that’s where United should be aiming. I’m not sure you’d do that with Maguire, unless you’ve got someone like a Rio [Ferdinand] next to him then possibly, yeah.
“It’s Manchester United, you’ve got to be talking about winning the Premier League. If it’s one of four, you’d probably take him but I’d have De Ligt in that as one of four. I think they’re both quite similar but De Ligt is a little bit younger so that’s on his side, he’s a little bit quicker, so I’d probably just go for De Ligt.”
Patrick Dorgu

A surprising pick to some, considering how well he performed in a couple of games before his injury in January, Dorgu would also be moved on if Scholes was calling the shots.
The former England international said: “They brought him in as a wing-back and he’s not really played much there. I’d probably sell. I’m not sure what position he is. Again, if you keep him then he’s just a squad player.”
Leny Yoro

Leny Yoro is only 20 years old and is widely regarded as one of world football’s best young players, but Scholes isn’t convinced the France Under-21 international is good enough.
He said: “I think he’s struggled, me. I think there’s something in there, I think he needs a bit of time, but if you had to make a choice now, I’d probably sell him.”
Luke Shaw

Man Utd’s longest-serving player, Luke Shaw has struggled with injuries throughout his spell at Old Trafford. Scholes thinks this summer is the right time for the 30-year-old full-back to move on.
He said: “When he was playing consistently, I don’t think there was a better left-back in the world, not just Europe. But if you’re asking me now, and he’s done alright appearance-wise this year, but I’d sell him. He doesn’t play enough games.”
Mason Mount

Another player who has struggled with injuries and fitness since joining United, Scholes thinks the club should cash in on Mason Mount.
He said: “I’d probably sell him and I like him, he’s a great footballer. But he’s never going to play in front of Bruno Fernandes. I’m not sure what other position he could play and he doesn’t play enough games.”
Casemiro

United fans have been chanting for Casemiro to get “one more year” in recent weeks at Old Trafford, but Scholes thinks the Brazilian has made the right decision to leave.
He said: “Yeah, I think it’s right [he’s going]. I think he’s turned his fortunes around, he’s been very good, but United need strengthening in that position massively.”

Manuel Ugarte has his strengths but many United fans remain unconvinced about his technical qualities. “I think he’ll go,” Scholes added.

Scholes would keep Matheus Cunha, Amad Diallo, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko but would sell Joshua Zirkzee, who has only managed to score nine goals in 69 appearances since his move from Bologna in 2024.
