Chelsea hold 'very favourable' buy-back clause for former attacker this summer - Sky

Chelsea’s strategic multi-club model could be set for a significant windfall or a familiar face’s return, as Borussia Dortmund targets Diego Moreira in a deal that highlights Chelsea’s buy-back terms.

Diego Moreira’s trajectory since joining Chelsea in 2023 has been a classic example of the club’s development strategy.

After a brief senior debut in the Carabao Cup and a learning-curve loan at Lyon, Moreira returned to shine for Chelsea’s Under-21s, notably netting a clinical hat-trick against Arsenal. However, with the first-team pathway crowded, Moreira made a permanent £1.7 million move to sister club Strasbourg in 2024.

This season in Ligue 1, Moreira has truly come of age under the guidance of Gary O’Neil. Operating primarily as a left wing-back, he has tallied four goals and seven assists across all competitions, including a standout performance against Paris Saint-Germain.

His displays have also seen his market value soar, which can only benefit the Chelsea owners.

Chelsea have the option to re-sign Diego Moreira

Florian Plettenburg has stated that Borussia Dortmund are among the clubs to have Diego Moreira on their shortlist for the summer.

The 21-year-old, currently under contract at Strasbourg until 2029, is planning a move in the upcoming window, with a potential fee in the region of £26-£35 million.

Chelsea are believed to hold a very favourable buy-back option.

We have no indication that Chelsea would even want to re-sign Moreira, considering the amount of options that Liam Rosenior has out wide, but never say never.

Chelsea are unlikely to sign Diego Moreira

While Moreira has flourished at Strasbourg, a return to Stamford Bridge this summer feels unlikely.

Under Liam Rosenior, Chelsea have moved away from using wing-backs, favoring a back-four system that would require Moreira to compete as a traditional winger.

The path to the first team is already heavily congested, with Pedro Neto, Estevao Willian, Alejandro Garnacho, and Jamie Gittens all vying for minutes out wide. Furthermore, the impending arrival of Portuguese sensation Geovany Quenda from Sporting CP adds another elite young profile.

With Chelsea needing to potentially balance the books and prioritise positions of need, triggering a buy-back for a player whose best role doesn’t exist in the current setup doesn’t make sense.
