Chelsea’s pursuit of Valentín Barco has been building steadily in recent weeks, and the latest update suggests the club are now at the finish line.
After failing to land the midfielder in January, the Blues kept pushing. Reports earlier this month indicated they were advancing in talks with Strasbourg, with confidence growing around a summer move.
However, there was still caution. Sources close to the situation insisted a final agreement had not yet been reached.
That gap may now have closed.
Agreement reached as Chelsea move decisively
Spanish journalist Andrés Onrubia Ramos now reports that Valentín Barco will play for Chelsea, with a full agreement in place.
According to him, the 21-year-old has agreed a six-year contract with the Blues. Argentine outletLa Gaceta, however, report slightly different terms – they claim the midfielder is set to sign a five-year contract running until June 2031.
Transfer fee details remain unclear at this stage. Still, it is expected to be significantly higher than the fee Strasbourg paid Brighton, around £8m (€9.4m) last summer.
Either way, the deal follows a strong transfer push from Chelsea after the international break, building on the groundwork laid earlier in the process.
Liam Rosenior’s influence has again been central. The Chelsea manager worked closely with Barco at Strasbourg and is said to have played a decisive role in convincing the player to accept the move.
Chelsea have also presented a clear sporting plan. Barco has reportedly been assured he will be an important part of the project, viewed as a potential key figure in the squad moving forward.
That promise appears to have made the difference.
From advanced talks to full agreement
This latest development marks a shift from previous updates.
Earlier claims from Argentina described negotiations as progressing well, but not yet complete. There was talk of details still needing to be resolved, despite Chelsea’s clear advantage due to the BlueCo structure linking both clubs.
Now, the tone has changed. The move is being presented as fully agreed, rather than simply close.
Chelsea’s position throughout has been strong. Their ownership link with Strasbourg has simplified negotiations, while Rosenior’s relationship with the player has added a personal layer to the deal.
What happens next
The expectation is that Valentín Barco will join Chelsea in June, once the season concludes.
If confirmed, this will complete a transfer story that has developed in clear stages. Initial interest turned into a failed January attempt, followed by renewed efforts and now, apparently, a full agreement.
The final step is official confirmation. Until then, Chelsea’s pursuit of Barco looks all but complete.
