Víctor Romero has publicly addressed growing speculation surrounding the future of his son, Cristian Romero, reminding the likes of Chelsea that he is protected by a £43 million release clause.
Recent reports have linked the World Cup–winning centre-back with a possible summer exit, with both CHELSEA named as one of the clubs monitoring his situation. Rumours intensified amid suggestions that Romero could seek a new challenge if Spurs fail to secure Champions League football next season.
Speaking to media in Argentina, Víctor Romero insisted his son is not agitating for a move but made it clear that clubs interested in prising him away from north London will find the path straightforward — provided they activate the clause.
Speaking to Cadena 3 about the latest rumours, Victor admitted the situation has escalated rapidly. “It’s a bombshell that keeps getting bigger. I hope it’s true; as a Belgrano fan and a father, what more could I want, but I don’t know anything,” he stated.
“He has two more years on his contract with Tottenham and a very high release clause. The English club isn’t going to let him go for free; it’s between $50-70m [£43.4-60.6m]. For me, they’ll want to recover what they invested,” he explained.
Romero, who joined Tottenham in 2021, has established himself as one of the most aggressive, high-impact centre-backs in the league. His performances have drawn praise, but his disciplinary record — including red cards and a reputation for taking risks — has also been a point of contention.
With CHELSEA seeking defensive reinforcements, Romero’s blend of elite physicality, front-foot defending, and title-winning pedigree makes him an intriguing target, particularly at a £43m price point — a relative bargain in today’s market.
Would Romero be worth the risk?
Romero is, without doubt, one of the Premier League’s most talented defenders. His anticipation, tackling aggression, and leadership are strong enough to improve either Chelsea immediately. At £43m, the value is exceptional for a player of his calibre.
But the risk is equally clear: Romero’s discipline. His tendency for rash challenges and emotional reactions has cost Spurs in key moments. Any club signing him must accept that his high-risk style is both his greatest strength and his most significant flaw.
