Newcastle United will be in the market for a full-back this summer now Kieran Trippier is set to leave the club.
Newcastle United have reportedly identified Italian wonderkid Marco Palestra as a potential long-term replacement for Kieran Trippier.
The 21-year-old first came to the attention of English football fans a year ago when he was linked with Liverpool. Contracted to Atalanta, Palestra has enjoyed a breakout campaign on loan at Cagliari.
He made his debut for Italy in the recent international break, suffering World Cup heartbreak on penalties against Bosnia and Herzegovina - a brutal first taste of senior action. Predominantly a right-wing back, Palestra is capable of playing on either side and his versatility would be valued at St James’ Park.
Newcastle United full-back dilemma
NewcastleWorld expects the Magpies to be active in the upcoming transfer market. While top priorities include a goalkeeper and possibly a striker, full-back has quickly become a crucial area to address.
Lewis Hall has developed into the undisputed first-choice at left-back. However, with Kieran Trippier, Emil Krafth and Matt Targett set to leave when their contracts expire, cover is beginning to look sparse.
That could be exacerbated further should Tino Livramento also seek a possible move. In Palestra, Newcastle would be signing a talented defender with his best years ahead of him.
Italian reports on Marco Palestra
Italian outlet TuttoSport claim Newcastle, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool have expressed an interest. On a positive note, the Magpies are named as the “hottest” potential suitor.
But Atalanta are known to be tough negotiators and view Palestra as someone they want in their ranks next season. As reported by NewcastleWorld last year, La Dea would not entertain a bid for Giorgio Scalvini - which turned out to be the case.
Despite just one full season under his belt, Atalanta are named as having a £40million price tag on Palestra’s head. English clubs could offer vastly greater wages - making the youngster one to watch over the coming months.
