Dallas Cowboys legend Troy Aikman has remained close to the NFL for nearly five decades. He was the starting quarterback for Dallas from 1989 to 2000. Shortly after his retirement from playing he started his broadcasting career and never looked back. In fact, Joe Buck and Troy Aikman have been in the booth together since 2002, making them the longest tenured broadcasting crew in NFL history.
However, in 2026 it would appear that Aikman has switched up which team he is pulling for this season. The twist is that it could have been the Dallas Cowboys, if they would have asked him to help out in a similar capacity.

Troy Aikman Says The Dallas Cowboys Never Asked Him To Help Their Team Like The Miami Dolphins Did
In January the Miami Dolphins asked Troy Aikman to assist with their search for a new head coach and general manager. On January 9th it was confirmed that former Green Bay Packers Vice President of Player Personnel Jon Eric-Sullivan would be the team’s new GM. On January 19th the team also hired former Green Bay Packers’ defensive Coordinator Jeff Hafley to be their new head coach.

Even though their search is over, Aikman is going to be sticking around to help the the team through the draft in an “undefined role.” In a recent interview Aikman let the public in (a little bit) on what his role is with the Dolphins and how he will be able to help them in the coming months:
I think the Dolphins were wise in understanding my relationships around the league and knowing that I have information that they don’t have or can’t get. I think they were smart in taking advantage of that, whether it was through me or through somebody else.
“The Cowboys have never elected to do that, at least with me Maybe they have with others.
I will say I’m pulling for the Dolphins, because now I have something at stake. I think they hired two really talented, wonderful people, and I think that’s gonna prove itself out.
I don’t have any ownership, I don’t have the influence, if you will, that Tom (Brady) seemingly has there with the Raiders. So it looks similar, but I’m not so sure that is.
I’ll continue to help in ways that are yet to be defined.
Why Is Troy Aikman’s Role With The Dolphins So Unique?
Aikman’s “job” with Miami allows for the team to get certain insights that other teams may not be privy to. Being a broadcaster, Aikman is allowed to meet with other teams and attend their practices when he is covering their games during the regular season. However, this is now public knowledge and other teams may not be as comfortable sharing information with him as they once were.
Regardless, Miami may have an inside track that no other teams do, especially the Dallas Cowboys.
It will be interesting to see how quickly Jeff Hafley can turn around the Dolphins’ team. Over the last 20 years Miami has reached the playoffs four times (2008, 2016, 2022, 2023) but have not made it past the wild card round.
