Harry Maguire extends his Manchester United stay with a new one-year deal, expressing his pride and belief in the club’s ambitious future
LONDON: Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has signed a new one-year contract with the club. The deal includes an option for a further season, extending his stay at Old Trafford.
The 33-year-old England centre-back was in the final months of his previous deal. He joined United from Leicester in 2019 for a reported £80 million.
“Representing Manchester United is the ultimate honour,” Maguire said in a statement. “I am delighted to extend my journey at this incredible club to at least eight seasons.”
He added that he could feel the ambition and potential of the squad. Maguire expressed confidence that the club’s best moments remain ahead.
Maguire has been a key figure since Michael Carrick took caretaker charge in January. United have risen to third in the Premier League under his guidance.
His club form earned an England recall last month after 18 months out. He played in both friendlies at Wembley, boosting his World Cup selection hopes.
Maguire has made 266 appearances for United, winning the FA Cup and League Cup. United director of football Jason Wilcox praised his mentality and resilience.
“Harry represents the mentality and resilience required to perform for Manchester United,” Wilcox said. He described Maguire as the ultimate professional with invaluable experience.
Maguire is currently with the United squad at a training camp in Dublin. The team has a three-and-a-half week gap between league fixtures.
United return to Premier League action against Leeds at Old Trafford. Their next match is scheduled for Monday, April 13.
