The Patriots are releasing linebacker Marte Mapu, ESPN’s Mike Reiss first reported Tuesday.
Mapu, a 2023 third-round pick, also played safety and special teams during his three-year Patriots career. He finishes his Patriots tenure with 89 tackles, three interceptions, .5 sacks, one QB hit and 12 pass breakups in 44 games with 10 starts.
Mapu, 26, began his career at safety before transitioning to linebacker in Mike Vrabel’s new defense last season. He played 120 defensive snaps, primarily in third-down obvious passing situations.
The move leaves the Patriots with Robert Spillane, Christian Elliss, K.J. Britt, Chad Muma, Amari Gainer and Otis Reese at linebacker with a need for more depth at the position. The Patriots also cut linebacker Jahlani Tavai this offseason and let Jack Gibbens walk in free agency to the Cardinals.
The Sacramento State product was a member of Bill Belichick’s final draft class with the Patriots. Cornerback Christian Gonzalez, wide receivers Kayshon Boutte and DeMario Douglas and punter Bryce Baringer remain from the 12-man class.
