Amad Says Manchester United Squad Believe Michael Carrick Is "The Right Man"

Eoin Harrington reporting from Manchester United camp at Carton House

Amad Diallo expressed his and his Manchester United teammate's support for Michael Carrick at a press conference in Kildare on Tuesday afternoon.

Carrick replaced Ruben Amorim as manager after the Portuguese was sacked in January, with his contract only running until the end of this season.

However, a rejuvenated United have won seven of their ten games under Carrick, leading to calls for him to be given the job on a permanent basis.

Winger Amad faced the media alongside teammate Bryan Mbeumo from United's Irish training camp, and was asked if he would like to see Carrick stay beyond the end of this season.

"Obviously, it's not for us as players to decide for the future," Amad said.

"But, yeah, he's been very great, he's been doing so much for the team. He has a lot of experience, he knows the club, he has the DNA.

"So we think he's the right man, but we are really happy for what he's doing right now."

That line on Carrick being the "right man" for the job was certainly the strongest line from any Manchester United player on the current manager's future.

Amad would double down on that stance later in the press conference, saying that the squad would be "really happy" to have Carrick as manager.

Since he's arrived at the club, he's been clear to everyone that he wants to win, he wants to reach the Champions League next season. He's been working with each player, he's doing very well and we are really happy to have him as manager.

Like I said before, he knows the club, he played for the club, so he has great experience, I think, to manage this club.

He's been here not too long, but he's been doing very good. His relationship with every player is very good.

Sometimes, you need this kind of manager to bring the club where they belong.

I think, my personal say, he's the right man, but it's not the players who decide if he's going to be the manager. But we are really happy to have him as a manager.

His praise was echoed by Bryan Mbeumo, who was alongside Amad for the press conference.

Mbeumo would say that it had been "easier" to communicate with Carrick, and that his long-standing relationship with the club was important.

"He knows the DNA of the club," Mbeumo said.

He knows how to talk to us as well. I think it's been easier because he knew the house.

It has been great to work under him.

Manchester United in Ireland

Manchester United arrived in Ireland on Monday evening and have set up shop at Carton House in Kildare for a four-day training camp ahead of their return to Premier League action against Leeds United.

The choice of Ireland as the venue for this training camp made a lot more sense last week, when it was confirmed that United and Leeds will face off at Croke Park in a pre-season friendly on August 12th, with pre-sale tickets launched on Tuesday afternoon.

By the time the sides meet at Old Trafford next Monday, it will have been 24 days since Manchester United's last game, a 2-2 draw at Bournemouth, which saw Harry Maguire sent off late in the game.

On Tuesday morning, United confirmed that Maguire has signed a contract extension to remain at the club next season, which will be his eighth in Manchester.

It was a long-awaited announcement, and Maguire was in good spirits on Tuesday, one of the most vocal as the United squad trained in front of the Irish media, having been greeted by dozens of adoring young fans on their way to the pitch.

One of those in action was Lisandro Martinez, who has returned to full training after two months on the sidelines.

Both Amad and Bryan Mbeumo were asked about the connection with the Irish fans, and said the welcome the team had received at Carton House had been outstanding.

Amad also commented on whether he believed young Irish midfielder Jack Moorhouse, who has been in several matchday squads, could be a long-term success at United.

Yeah, I think yeah. It's up to him to do well, to work hard, to be humble.

He knows how the club is. If he wants to be at the maximum level, he has to work hard. A club like United, you demand a lot.

I wish him all the best, but he has a good potential.

Manchester United v Leeds United takes place at Dublin's Croke Park on Wednesday, August 12th at 7:30pm. Tickets are on sale on Ticketmaster this Friday, April 10th.

Tickets were in high demand in Tuesday's pre-sale, suggesting Croke Park is likely to be full for the first-ever game at GAA HQ between two overseas soccer teams.
