Harry Maguire has agreed a new short-term deal with Manchester United.
The defender was set to exit from the camp in the summer as his contract came to an end. However, he has now signed new terms with the club, extending his stay until June 2027. This one-year deal also has the option of an additional year that could take his time with the club up to nine seasons.
It is a reward that reflects the professionalism of the 33-year-old throughout his time with the team.
Maguire moved for a record-breaking fee of £80 million to Manchester United from **Leicester City**at the start of the 2019/20 season. He was then appointed captain by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but criticism came his way through this spell, culminating in an alleged bomb threat to his house in April 2022.
**Erik ten Hag**handed Lisandro Martinez his role as a starter, and the Dutchman stripped him of the armband in 2023. But Maguire maintained his cool, and he has returned to favour with Michael Carrick. A solid partner for Leny Yoro, he has started all 10 matches under the interim head coach.
Maguire made clear his happiness at the opportunity to stay at **Old Trafford**for a little longer.
He said: “Representing Manchester United is the ultimate honour. It is a responsibility that makes myself and my family proud every single day.
“I am delighted to extend my journey at this incredible club to at least eight seasons and continue to play in front of our special supporters to create more amazing moments together.
“You can feel the ambition and potential of this exciting squad. The determination throughout the whole club to fight for major trophies is clear for everyone to see and I am confident that our best moments together remain ahead of us.”
Jason Wilcox, the club’s director of football, also offered his thoughts on the decision: *“Harry represents the mentality and resilience required to perform for Manchester United. He is the ultimate professional who brings invaluable experience and leadership to a young, ambitious squad.*
“Harry, like everyone at the club, is completely determined to help Manchester United to achieve regular and sustained success.”
