Arsenal fans got some relief this week as The Football Association (FA) has made its decision about Gabriel Martinelli after he pushed a referee during a big match. The young Brazilian star will not face any extra punishment which means he can keep playing for Arsenal without a ban.
What Happened in the Arsenal vs. Southampton game?
It all took place during Arsenal’s FA Cup quarter final against Southampton. The Gunners were the big favorites, but they lost 2-1 in a big surprise. In the last few minutes of the game, the referee gave Arsenal a free kick. Martinelli was in a hurry to take the free kick quickly and as a consequence to that he rushed in and pushed referee Sam Barrott out of the way with his hands so he could get the ball.
The referee was not happy and he immediately showed Martinelli a yellow card and warned him. Many people watching the game were shocked by the push. Some said it looked like disrespect to the referee where as others including ex-referees said Martinelli should have got a red card and been sent off but the referee on the day only gave a yellow.

The former Premier League referee Mark Halsey said it was “total disrespect”. He thought it was a red card offence because you should never push a match official.

After the match, everyone waited to see what the FA would do. The FA is the boss of English football and looks at serious incidents. Sometimes they add extra punishment even if the referee gave only a yellow card. But in this case, the FA decided not to take any further action against Martinelli.
The reason being the referee saw everything clearly and already gave a yellow card on the spot. When a referee deals with something during the game, the FA usually does not step in later unless it was a clear miss. As per reports, Martinelli will escape any ban or fine from the FA which makes Arsenal fans happy because their fast winger can now play in the next Premier League games without worry.
