Paul Winstanley would only leave Chelsea for Tottenham under one condition - Ben Jacobs

Paul Winstanley is unwilling to settle for anything less than total authority if he is to leave Stamford Bridge, with the Chelsea co-Sporting Director believed to be holding out for a main man role.

Since arriving from Brighton in November 2022, Paul Winstanley has played a big role in the Clearlake-Boehly era, working alongside Laurence Stewart to overhaul the club’s entire sporting structure.

He has overseen a data-driven recruitment strategy that has seen over £1 billion invested in elite young talent, including the British record signing of Moises Caicedo at Chelsea.

Winstanley’s influence extends far beyond just transfers; he oversees the men’s, women’s, and academy setups, ensuring a unified philosophy across Cobham. And despite facing criticism during periods of transition and financial scrutiny, his position remains secure after a recent six-year contract extension.

Although Winstanley’s future is a talking point after the Tottenham interest.

PROVE ME WRONG: No midfielder is more perfect for Caicedo, than Barco 🔟

Chelsea have reportedly agreed a deal for Barco.

Paul Winstanley’s stance on leaving Chelsea

Ben Jacobs has issued an update on the Tottenham situation (The Last Word on Spurs), which included Paul Winstanley’s feelings on being open to leaving Chelsea if he becomes the main man.

“Yeah, I think they’re both (Lange and Vinai) under huge pressure. Johan Lange is watching a process that he is a part of to hire a so-called co-Sporting Director, but it wouldn’t be any surprise if there’s a restructuring and the names on the short list for that co-Sporting Director will all in likelihood want to be the main man.

“You could have a sort of CEO of football or create two titles or different remits under the same titles, but Paul Winstanley is not going to leave Chelsea as a co-Sporting Director unless he’s the main guy.

“Sebastian Kehl wants to be a sporting director. And Dougie Freedman is not just a sporting director now, but is running an entire multisport project for Diriyah in Saudi Arabia.”
