Arsenal legend announces retirement from football

Aaron Ramsey has announced his retirement from professional football, bringing the curtain down on a distinguished career that spanned nearly two decades.

The 35-year-old confirmed his decision in a statement on social media after spending the past year without a club following his departure from Pumas.

Ramsey leaves the game after making 551 club appearances across spells with Arsenal, Cardiff City and Juventus, while also earning 86 caps for the Wales national team.

“This has not been an easy decision to make,” Ramsey said in his farewell message. “After a lot of consideration, I have decided to retire from football.”

Ramsey also paid tribute to the managers, team-mates and staff who supported him throughout his career.

“It would not have been possible without the incredible input of all the managers I have played under and all the staff who have helped me in many ways,” he added.

The midfielder began his professional journey at Cardiff City, progressing through the club’s academy before making history in April 2007.

At just 16 years and 124 days old, Ramsey became the youngest player to represent the Welsh side.

His rapid rise attracted the attention of Arsenal, who signed him in the summer of 2008.

Ramsey would go on to spend 11 years in North London and establish himself as one of the club’s most influential midfielders of the modern era.

During his time at Arsenal he made 369 appearances, scoring 64 goals and providing 60 assists in all competitions.

He also helped the club secure six major trophies, including three FA Cup triumphs.

Ramsey famously scored decisive goals in two of those finals, cementing his place in the club’s recent history.

After leaving Arsenal in 2019, Ramsey joined Juventus on a free transfer and added further silverware to his collection.

He won three trophies in Italy, including the Serie A title during the 2019–20 season.

Later spells followed with OGC Nice and Rangers before he moved to Mexico with Pumas in 2025.

Ramsey also enjoyed a distinguished international career with Wales.

He scored 21 goals and provided nine assists in 86 appearances for his country.

One of the defining moments of his international career came at UEFA Euro 2016 when Wales reached the semi-finals in a historic run.

Ramsey also helped Wales qualify for the 2022 World Cup.

His final appearance for the national side came in September 2024.

Ramsey’s retirement closes the chapter on a career remembered for decisive goals, technical quality and a lasting impact at Arsenal.
