Arsenal travel to Estádio José Alvalade tonight with a quiet but meaningful advantage tucked away in the team news: Sporting CP will be without their captain Morten Hjulmand, suspended for the first leg, along with three other players who each contribute something important to Rui Borges’ setup.
This is not a Sporting side stripped to the bones. Their core attacking group remains intact, and Luis Suarez is in the kind of form that commands attention on its own. But the absences are concentrated in areas that Arsenal, specifically, are built to exploit.
Why Morten Hjulmand’s suspension matters so much for Arsenal

Hjulmand is not just Sporting’s captain in the symbolic sense. He is the organiser in midfield, the player who sets the defensive tempo, protects the backline and takes charge of positional structure at set pieces. That last detail is particularly relevant. Both Arsenal and Sporting are among the most prolific set-piece sides in their respective leagues this season. Arsenal have scored 19 set-piece goals in the Premier League, accounting for over 30% of their total league output. Sporting have contributed 15 in Liga Portugal, the highest in the division, representing around 22% of their goals.
When two specialist set-piece teams meet, having your best defensive organiser at dead balls suspended is a real problem. Arsenal will know this and will look to make it count.
There is a transfer subplot too. Hjulmand has reportedly been on Arsenal’s radar in recent months, with the midfielder said to carry a genuine admiration for the club. Tonight, he watches from the stands as the side he reportedly dreams of joining attacks the space he would normally protect.

Left-back Nuno Santos is also out through injury, and his absence reduces Sporting’s width and delivery from the left. He has been a consistent crossing threat this season and his absence narrows the attacking options on that side considerably. Up front, Fotis Ioannidis is unavailable, removing the physical presence and aerial threat Sporting use to attack crosses directly. Luis Guilherme, a former West Ham player who provides energy and flexibility off the bench, is another who will not feature.
In place of Hjulmand in the double pivot, Zeno Debast, a natural defender, is expected to partner Hidemasa Morita in central midfield. It is a pragmatic call from Borges, bringing physical awareness and defensive discipline to an area that will come under pressure, but it is not a like-for-like replacement for what Hjulmand offers in terms of midfield control and leadership.

Arsenal cannot afford complacency. The attacking three of Geny Catamo, Francisco Trincao and Pedro Goncalves remains fully intact, and Luis Suarez leads the line in the kind of form that demands serious respect. The Colombian has scored 24 league goals in 25 appearances this season and contributed five in ten Champions League fixtures, adding seven assists across both competitions. He is not a makeshift replacement for Viktor Gyokeres. He is a striker in his own right, and a dangerous one at that.
Portuguese outlet O Jogo also report that Geovany Quenda, who has been working his way back from injury, could be available from the bench. His pace and directness add another unpredictable dimension if Sporting need a goal late on.
Sporting CP probable XI vs Arsenal
Based on reports from O Jogo, Sporting are expected to line up as follows: Rui Silva; Ivan Fresneda, Ousmane Diomande, Goncalo Inacio, Maxi Araujo; Zeno Debast, Hidemasa Morita; Geny Catamo, Francisco Trincao, Pedro Goncalves; Luis Suarez.
Arsenal know the threat that awaits them. But with Hjulmand in the stands and the set-piece battle tilting in the Gunners’ favour before a ball has been kicked, tonight’s first leg arrives at a moment where the margins, for once, are pointing in Arsenal’s direction.
