After trading WR Jaylen Waddle earlier this offseason, the Miami Dolphins are preparing for the possibility of moving running back Devon Achane before the start of the 2026 campaign. Under new leadership, head coach Jeff Hafley is rebuilding a new system led by quarterback Malik Willis. However, to no surprise, Achane did not report on the first day to the Dolphins’ voluntary workout. While it’s not mandatory, it’s something to watch, and it’s interesting to decipher what Hafley means when he says it comes down to “business.”
Although the Dolphins aren’t looking to move Achane, they said the same thing about Waddle. Selected as a third-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, the Pro Bowler is entering the final year of his current rookie deal. Many should anticipate Achane to continue sitting throughout the rest of the offseason until an agreement is reached.

Dolphins Star Devon Achane “Did Not” Report to Voluntary Workout, May Lead to Trade Demand
Achane has the leverage in this situation. The running back led the team in rushing yards, hauling in 238 carries for 1,350 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns to go with 67 receptions for 488 receiving yards and four receiving touchdowns. The Dolphins would want to avoid a situation where Achane winds up demanding a trade, which is likely the route the running back will take.
Miami is no longer in a position to win either way. After releasing Tyreek Hill, Tua Tagovailoa and trading Waddle, the Dolphins are starting from scratch. Achane is at the peak of his career, and nobody should blame him if he wants to thrive somewhere else.
A Trade in June?
While there could be potential suitors such as the Panthers, Bears and Seahawks, Achane is expected to receive calls throughout the entire month leading up to the draft. He might not be available now, but if the Dolphins like a deal from an opposing team, nobody should be shocked to see Achane in an entirely different uniform before the 2026 season.
The running back should be sitting out for as long as possible. The Dolphins could select a running back early this draft if Achane requests a trade before the end of the month.
