Chelsea could offer Belgian star to Sunderland as goalkeeper bid 'assessed'

The latest transfer talk as Sunderland prepare for the summer transfer window.

Chelsea’s reported interest in Sunderland star Robin Roefs has left the Blues facing a major decision over one of their current goalkeepers.

Netherlands Under-21 international Roefs has established himself as one of the most consistent goalkeepers in the Premier League after enjoying a stellar first season at the Stadium of Light. The 23-year-old has arguably become on the Sunderland’s most impressive signings of an ambitious summer transfer window and has provided a solid foundation for what has been a remarkable first season back in the Premier League.

After keeping a clean sheet on his debut in a 3-0 win against West Ham United, Roefs’ commanding presence and calm nature has helped Regis Le Bris’s side rack up some impressive results against the likes of Newcastle United, Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea - and the latter of that quartet have reportedly taken notice of his performances throughout the last eight months.

TeamTalk reports Roefs was one of a number of keepers being targeted by the Blues over the weekend as they remain unconvinced by current stoppers Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen. The report suggested Chelsea were ‘assessing potentially paying up to £60million for Roefs’ - but also revealed Liverpool and Manchester City were ‘keeping tags’ on the Black Cats star despite having a wealth of options in their own goalkeeping department.

French outlet Jeunes Footeux have provided another update on the Blues interest in Roefs by claiming they could offer Belgium Under-21 international stopper Mike Penders to Sunderland in a deal that would lower the initial fee for the Black Cats keeper. The former Genk youngster joined the Blues during summer the summer of 2024 before returning to his old club on a season-long agreement. Penders was then sent on loan to Strasbourg ahead of the current season and he has kept 11 clean sheets in 41 appearances as the Ligue 1 club have impressed in league and cup competitions during the campaign. The report claims Strasbourg are ‘dreaming of extending the loan for one more year’ - but suggests their hopes could be dashed if Chelsea make a move for Roefs during the summer transfer window.
