Former NFL standout and Morehouse College football coach Terance Mathis has found his next job after his stint in HBCU football. Mathis has been hired as the head football coach at Athens Christian School, which is located in Athens, Georgia. Mathis was recently introduced as the coach of the team.
The move comes after Mathis spent 2 seasons at Morehouse College. Although the team struggled in its first season, only winning 1 game, it found success in the 2025 season. They won 3 games, including a huge victory over historic rival Tuskegee in the Morehouse-Tuskegee Classic.
Their win against Tuskegee was the start of a 3-game win streak to start October, where they also beat Central State and Lane College. Before Morehouse, Mathis boasted an interesting college football journey as a player and a coach. Terance Mathis entered the NFL after being selected by the New York Jets in the 1990 draft following a standout collegiate career at the University of New Mexico, where he competed in both football and basketball. He later joined the Atlanta Falcons in 1994 and produced a career season with 111 receptions, finishing third in the league in touchdown catches and earning a Pro Bowl selection.

Mathis later transitioned into coaching, serving as offensive coordinator and inside receivers coach at Savannah State Tigers football in 2011 and 2012. During his time leading the Maroon Tigers, the program showed some signs of progress even as the team continued to face challenges on the field.
Now, he looks to turn around an Athens Christian team that finished with a 4-6 record in 2025 and hasn't had a winning season since 2021.
