The Miami Dolphins signed Malik Willis to a three-year, $67.5 million contract this offseason to be their starting QB,per ESPN. However, could Dolphins general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan decide to take a signal-caller with one of his draft picks?
Willis found his confidence as a backup QB with the Green Bay Packers behind Jordan Love. During his time in Green Bay, the new Dolphins signal-caller had a passer rating of 134.6 with 972 yards and 6 touchdowns in 11 games, per StatMuse.
Now, Willis will look to prove he’s indeed an NFL starting QB. However, could Miami be tempted to take a QB, and there’s a chance former Alabama Crimson Tide QB Ty Simpson could fall to them at No. 30.
Still, 104.3 WQAM’s Joe Rose believes that Miami should avoid drafting Simpson.
“I would be really disappointed if we took him in the first round with either one of those two picks,”Rose said on the April 7 edition of “The Joe Rose Show.” “[If the Dolphins draft Ty Simpson], then I have to start looking at questioning Jon‑Eric Sullivan early here.”
Moreover, Rose believes the Dolphins have too many other needs to waste a draft pick on a QB.
“There’s a whole bunch of holes on this team,“ Rose added. “I don’t want to sit here and talk about 17 quarterbacks to add another guy to the room. I want to see a top‑notch young receiver come in and perform like the rookie receivers around the league who are dominating in Year 1.”
Dolphins Urged to Do Homework on Ty Simpson
Recently, ESPN NFL analyst Dan Orlovsky stated that he believes the Dolphins should do their homework on Simpson despite signing Willis this offseason.
“I think they can get a draft wide receiver that they can build around earlier in the draft,“Orlovsky said on the March 17 edition of “NFL Live.““But it does make me think, because there are two teams that are great places for the Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson. Arizona would be one, and Miami would be another.
“I know they just paid Malik Willis. I know that. But given the timeline, and given just the style of the quarterback with the style of offense that would be in Miami, at least under this regime, it makes me think, even though they signed Malik Willis, they should do their homework and entertain drafting Ty Simpson in Miami.”
Malik Willis Signing Gets Questioned
Meanwhile, Yahoo! Sports’ Nate Tice recently questioned the signing of Willis, as it doesn’t align with the Dolphins’ timeline, given the team is now entering a full-blown rebuild.
“The Malik Willis signing seems like it’s on a different timeline than the rest of the Dolphins moves,“Tice wrote on March 17 on X.
Furthermore, Tice notes that Miamiaren’t doing much toallow Willisto succeed and determine whether the quarterback is a playerthat they want to build around.
“I understand that MIA is basically giving Willis an extended tryout to see if he has a chance to be a guy,“Tice wrote. “But, there’s not much around him to evaluate with. And it could create a tough situation if he does play decently – but not great – and you’re still in position to take a QB. What wins out? all hypotheticals, I know. Just trying to sort it out.”
