Arsenal got more than they bargained for in the showdown against Sporting in their UEFA Champions League series.

English side Arsenal got more than they bargained for in the first leg of their quarterfinal series against Portuguese side Sporting on Tuesday.

The Gunners hit the pitch on a bit of chilly night in Lisbon, seemingly content with walking away with a solid draw. But then, in injury time, Kai Havertz sealed the match with a fateful strike. The tally broke the backs of Sporting, leaving them empty-handed after the final whistle. Arsenal walked away with a huge 1-0 victory.

Sporting 0-1 Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta’s side exploited a crucial mistake in Sporting’s line, allowing Havertz to sneak in between two defenders. The German international took a nifty pass from Gabriel Martinelli and buried the shot to notch the go-ahead goal.

The relief on the English side was palpable. After back-to-back losses in tournament play, the Gunners bounced back with a gritty victory.

Arsenal dropped its previous match to Southampton in the FA Cup quarterfinals, while still reeling from a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City in the EL Cup Final.

Despite the injuries, Arsenal shook off its recent defeats and put on a solid showing. Arteta’s side played without regulars Jurries Timber, Eberechi Eze, Piero Hincapie, and Bukayo Saka. That’s why the draw seemed like a great outcome with such a depleted lineup.

The victory is even more impressive considering the circumstances.

Man of the Match Key in Arsenal Win

One of the regulars back in the fold for Arsenal was keeper David Raya. Raya ended up becoming the Man of the Match. The Gunners’ starting goalkeeper made five total saves en route to the clean sheet.

It was a solid outing, one that Arsenal desperately needed.

Havertz, who scored the winner, offered nothing but praise for Raya.

“Unbelievable. I think still he’s underestimated in the world of football but for me, the last two seasons, he’s the best keeper in the world. He’s outstanding, he’s saved us so many times and we’re very glad to have him.”

The Spanish international has certainly earned a justified reputation with Arsenal for being among the best keepers in the world.

Havertz Acknowledged Team Effort in Crucial Rally

All told, it was a strong team effort that allowed Arsenal to rally from its previous two defeats. The turnaround would not have happened if the Gunners had not come together at such a crucial time, as Havertz noted:

“Definitely a big turnaround for us because we lost the last two matches. We wanted to get a turnaround today and we made that happen. We stick together as a group, we have so much more to come this season. Seven weeks to go, we can win big titles and we’re going to go for that.”

Arsenal will hope that momentum carries over into its next matches. The club will return to London to face Bournemouth at Emirates Stadium on Saturday. Thereafter, the Gunners will face off against Sporting in the second leg of the Champions League series.

This time, however, Arsenal will have home-field advantage. Plus, having the upper hand on aggregate should make their matchup a little easier. Of course, there are no easy wins, certainly not at this stage of the UEFA Champions League.
