How first-half frustration helped Gus fire Blues to victory

The right wing-back missed a number of excellent opportunities during the opening 45 minutes at the Borough Sports Ground.

But Scott-Morriss bounced back to bag a brace after the break to help Blues bank a 3-0 victory.

“I was so frustrated at half-time,” said Scott-Morriss.

“I had a bit of a nibble up at Harry Taylor but I held my hand up and said to the boys I should have put us one or two up.

“It made me even more fired up for the second half and I took it out on them really.”

Scott-Morriss’ two goals took him to 15 for the season.

But he also took positives from how the first half went.

“I should have done better but I’d rather be getting the chances and missing them, rather than not getting them at all,” said Scott-Morriss.

“It was frustrating to miss some absolute sitters but you just have to keep going and keep on getting in the right areas.”

Scott-Morriss did exactly that at the start of the second half.

And he eventually benefited when scoring following a misplaced defensive header from a Harry Boyes cross.

“Boyesy ran out of chops eventually and I had to make about 15 runs into the box but the defender headed onto me and it went in,” said Scott-Morriss.

“Sometimes when you miss some easy chances that’s what happens and you get the ones that go in off your backside.

“But being in there in the right place is important.”

Scott-Morriss followed the goal with a superbly taken second to take him to 15 for the season - level with striker Andrew Dallas as the Shrimpers’ top scorer.

And the 28-year-old is enjoying his battle with the Blues striker.

“To have Dallo on so many is brilliant as well,” said Scott-Morriss.

“We have a bit of banter and I keep on winding him up.

“But if that drives him on to get another five or six goals then happy days.”

The seventh-placed Shrimpers have now won four games in succession.

And Scott-Morriss believes a successful Easter period has given Kevin Maher’s side even more momentum.

“Coming out of the Easter weekend with six points is so good,” said Scott-Morriss.

“It can really elevate you for the rest of the season.

“It’s two quick games and to come out with six points really shows where we’re at.

“But we’re looking forward and trying to hunt down Forest Green. As long as we keep winning then we’ll get the job done.”
