Manchester United have received advice on where to start when it comes to offloading players this summer. With interim manager Michael Carrick currently in charge, uncertainty remains over who will occupy the dugout when the United embark on their recruitment drive.

While midfield is undoubtedly the area where United are expected to concentrate much of their summer investment, departures will equally prove crucial to generate funds and create room within their squad.

Carrick's team will have benefited from three weeks without fixtures by the time they welcome Leeds United next Monday, with United having journeyed to Dublin this week for intensive training sessions. We explore the latest developments emerging from Old Trafford, including Scholes' perspective on summer business.

Scholes was forthright in declaring United need a wholesale clearout this summer after calling on his former club to release eight first-team players. During a 'keep or sell' feature on The Good, The Bad and The Football podcast, alongside former teammate Nicky Butt and television personality Paddy McGuinness, the 11-time league champion delivered the sell verdict more frequently than some viewers might have anticipated.

The group of players includes Noussair Mazraoui, Harry Maguire, Leny Yoro, Patrick Dorgu, Luke Shaw, Mason Mount, Manuel Ugarte and Joshua Zirkzee. While the likes of Joshua Zirkzee and Noussair Mazraoui could leave the club following a decrease in game time this season, Maguire committed his future to the club on Tuesday.

Harry Maguire future

Having been confronted with an uncertain future with his contract running down at the end of the season, Maguire has now committed to a new one-year deal with Manchester United. United also possess the option to prolong the England defender's deal by an additional year.

The 33-year-old has experienced a revival under interim manager Carrick with United climbing to third in the table with Maguire playing a pivotal role. Speaking after signing his new contract, Maguire said: "Representing Manchester United is the ultimate honour.
